Study the Customs and Excise website thoroughly. It lists conditions, rates, tariff classes, regulations, procedures, exemptions and all else you need to know. Depending on the items to bring you might have to pay additional import fees, always when above the allowed duty-free threshold. Some countries also add a fine if you get busted going over the threshold while failing to declare - not sure about Cambodia. Possibly this can all be evaded with some coffee-money to the customs officer but be prepared to write off all as a business loss when that fails and spread the costs/profits/losses over several 'shipments' to check whether it is worth the hassle at all. Shopping for items also takes time, the time spent on that you could also work so that is another alternative cost on the venture to take into account.

http://www.customs.gov.kh/customs-declaration/

When you have settled on what to bring, check their weight so you can calculate the added 'transport costs' on each. If done as excess baggage, this might add up considerably on heavy items. Look at your airlines website in advance, to avoid disappointment or high costs when checking in. Usually when you purchase this beforehand it is a lot cheaper than while departing.

What to bring? I would look into cosmetics, as that does not weigh a lot. These do not have to be high-end (Chanel, Dior etc. the usual French and Italian luxury brands). Mid-tier brands like Rimmel, Maybelline, L'Oreal etc. will sell as well. You will have as added value that it will really originate from Europe and still be sealed in their plastic wrappers and boxes. Khmer ladies fear cheap copies, I am sure your girlfriend will confirm that. Let her set up a Facebook shop/channel and you are in business, questions will roll in whether you can deliver product X or Y and give you an idea of the market. Even run-of-the-mill brands like Nivea can sell well, a simple roll-on deodorant that costs under $2 can sell for upto double that price in KoW.

Have to agree what is said above about shipping containers instead of suitcases to allow for sufficient scale. Possibly it is better to have items from AliBaba, Banggood or other Chinese stores shipped to Cambodia for (whole)sale. Spend some time checking (European) websites together with your girlfriend for pricing on items you intend to buy. If she says on product X that the price is a fraction of that in Cambodia you know you have a possible candidate for import!

A friend of mine lives in Goa, he has to leave every 6 months for a visa. He gets orders and brings back frozen meat, bacon, sausages etc and various other food stuffs that brit expats miss, he makes around a £100 or so, not much but when you are living on a pension every little thing helps.

I'd say establish a fb page and lots of friends an ask then what they would like you to bring over,

My friend buy bulk on Alibaba/AliExpress and sells to distributors and or businesses. Cambodians don’t really do the whole AliExpress thing yet.

He once bought something (something to do with cycling) and went into a shop and the guy bought the whole lot. $10k worth. He still buys regular and even tells him where he gets it but the guy just shrugs when he mentions “online” or “AliExpress” but he knows “Jack Ma” strangely.

Saying that his house is full of boxes of weird stuff so I guess he’s got some dead stock.
I went there to say hi and show him my new solar powered plant waterer (Don’t ask) and he opened up four boxes full of them. He told me I bought it from his customer. “I would have given you one for free if you asked!” Yeah, like how would I know.

Don’t know about UK but the US is a great place to buy bulk.

Most available in Cambodia too. But that stuff is cheaper in Europe. Also Cambodians are willing to pay extra if it's from Europe. They think it's better than the one from local or Thai shop as Flexxman said.

Sure, if the target group would be rich Cambodians who can afford shopping sprees in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong. But there are also lots of young Khmer ladies who would love to buy a $15 L'Oreal lipstick instead of paying $30 for the same item, which you could be buying for a tenner in Europe. The Khmer lady still would have to travel to Aeon to purchase it as it will not be available in local market or shop, further adding to costs. On availability: those two-layer 24 hour lipsticks were nowhere to be found in Cambodia when new and still difficult to find (therefore in demand). It is easy to buy from Facebook, send money and have your package returned to the village by the driver of the bus to collect from him for a minor fee. Many people peddle everything on FB from clothes to jewellery, sometimes accompanied with rather nice promotional videos. Check the timeline of your girlfriends FB and be amazed at the variety of such 'webshops'.

KOW happiness wrote: Wed Apr 24, 2019 7:51 am I am going back to Cambodia before long and I would like to purchase some reasonably affordable items which I can sell in Cambodia to make a profit on to offset the cost of the flight ticket.

Am not interested in any illegal items, e.g. class A drugs or firearms! However, anything else which isn't too perishable and is going to provide a good potential return for it's size and weight, I'd be interested in considering if I can legally take it into Cambodia and on an aeroplane flight.

I've already got some ideas and will probably take a selection of different items, I don't mind taking some extra weight since I'll probably pay for an additional 20-30kg of excess baggage anyway.

Can be used or new items, am also interested where might be the best place to purchase them here in the UK, e.g. eBay / Amazon / Supermarkets etc. Items which are likely to be subject to import duties on entry, please specify related details if known.

My budget for this is $1000-2000 roughly speaking.

Looking forward to hearing some suggestions, thanks!! :beer3:
Colmans English Mustard and Yorkshire Tea Bags would do for me as starters.

When E bay was in its early days i heard of somebody in Goa who had an E bay online shop. They would go around the tourist shops in Goa and take pictures of loads of items usually with the shops consent, Post the items online and then when they got a sale go and purchase the item send it and hey presto!
