Laundry

Post by nndavid »

Need advice on a reliable laundry service that will do a hot water wash and iron, and preferably one that will pick-up and deliver. Something between the $1/kg service that will dry your clothes on the sidewalk and the $8 per shirt option at my hotel is what I'm looking for! Did a search here but could not find anything.

Any suggestions with contact details greatly appreciated.

Cambodia is a small country, but still a big enough place. Maybe narrow it down by city?

Joking aside, You’ll find Yeaksa laundry within a couple of blocks walk of just about anywhere in Phnom Penh. Just be careful that they don’t make up for lack of detergent with extra bleach.
Are the hotels that pricey now? That’s more than European money. I’ve normally managed to get laundry done in Asian hotels at reasonable cost. $2/kg. But that was a while back, now.

I've lived in several rental apartments in Phnom Penh during my years here, and most of those apartments have come with a washing machine, but they have always been those top loading washing machines that only use cold water. I think that's why most of the detergents that you can buy here are a lot stronger/harsher than the detergents back in my home country. It took me quite a while to realise this, not only that the washing machines only use cold water, but that this was the reason why I would often end up with lots of rashes and spots on my skin, due to the strength of the detergents they often use.

Once I realised this, I started to use proper launderettes which use hot water machines, and my rashes and spots disappeared almost immediately. I currently live in an apartment which luckily has a hot water washing machine, so i now do all my own washing myself, and if I were ever to move again, I would always ensure it had a hot water machine. I currently live in an apartment which has a hot water washing machine, and if I were ever to move again, I would always ensure that the washing machine was a hot water machine.

Unless you're trapped in an apartment which is difficult to move out of, or you're specifically looking for someone else to do your washing for you, I strongly recommend considering moving to an apartment with a hot water machine. Or do what I did in one of my apartments, and get a hot water machine installed myself.

It's the temperature of the water that properly cleans your clothes, not necessarily the detergent.

Thanks for your reply, which is appreciated. Unfortunately, this is the kind of thing with bleach substituting for detergent etc., that I'm trying to avoid. Any other ideas on something a bit more upmarket (and therefore more reliable) where I might not risk damage to my work clothes?

In the past, the boutique type hotels I've stayed at have been quite reasonable with the in-house laundry pricing. I'm at the Hyatt this time and its simply ridiculous - I was rounding up but a shirt costs $7.50! WHile I don't want to risk damaging my clothes, I also think $7.50 is quite unreasonable!

@xandreu Thanks. Agree with you re. hot water. Another reason I'm looking for options other than the usual $1/kg places, which I'm told use cold water. I'm at a hotel and not an expat here so am looking for a quick fix, so to speak!
