It is, heavily cultivated and you'd have to be really unlucky. I have run, biked and birded most of the countryside.

battambang is more risky. it depends how far you want to wander.

Yes, I am aware about Battambang and there are place where I would not wander off the track. However, the question was about Siem Reap and you would have to wander a fair bit to be ending up in B'bang.

i'd say the area south from Pailin to Koh Kong towards the thai border is worse than Batt
goes back to the US/Thai backing the KR against the Vietnamese.
We had to have guides back in 87/88 wen we crossed overland out of Bo Rai
