If you were hanging around Bar Red you've probably already seen the paper version of the Kampot Survival Guide. Online here: : http://www.kampotsurvivalguide.com/
They have some nice photos too.

Thanks for the resources. Don't recall the guide at Bar Red just the absolute worst burger ever - was late at night after a show and back then nothing else was open that late. Appreciate the link. Cheers.

My buddy rents his house for a mere $500/mo when not there. So the cost estimates you've given me seem right on. He doesn't stay there all that much, and I could see myself using Kampot as my base, while I occasionally travel to Thailand / Vietnam as I wish - depending on how much i want to spend.
So is this $500 place any good to you or not? I'm not getting your drift.

Yes. But simply more than I need. I'm trying to move down in size, his place is pretty large.

I'd rather see what's available for around $250 - $300, or less, from what I'm gathering, including from him, that is a good amount for a nice place for one person in / around Kampo. Save the rest for the unexpected. Though none of this is pushing my budget at all. I'd like A/C, that's not possible at his place for a couple reasons, the size being the big factor (electricity cost...)

To sum up: I love his place, but haven't seen it since 2012 and have been told there's many new bars / restaurants on his street now. That's a factor. I liked it in 2012, quiet at night. It was loud as hell in the AM, but that I was ok with that.

If it's loud at night there now, that would be a definite put off. I like nightlife, but I like some degree of quiet where I rest my head. I really just need to get back there and reevaluate the situation.

I'd recommend it a family member / close friend who wanted something big enough for a family, if that means anything.

Hope that cleared it up. I should add he only rents to one or two people he really trusts, more about how they respect the place then anything else. I believe he's left it empty many times except for the house lady who looks after it. He's a laid back guy, really a wonderful person but very particular about who he lets stay there. There is a full time resident there now. Another really great guy, but I've only met him briefly.

The correct term we use for these people is "top blokes", we don't ever use "great guy".

If you want to fit in you need to use the right terminology.

Let's give it a try... His current tenant is a top bloke. And me? I'm a wanker.

Wouldn't a '' asshole '' be the ''top bloke's '' best friend.
