The USA is the richest country on Earth. At least I think it is? That said, it about distribution of wealth. You won't find a lot of it in the US. To my mind, American culture has been actively sucked up as a model in policy decisions around the planet. Especially in the field of economics. Therefore, a lot of the socialist countries in Europe have also seen huge gulfs appear between rich and poor since their socialist inception mainly after the first and second world wars.
Still in Europe we see a lot more social structures for the poor. Hospitals , dentists, opticians all offer free treatment/ equipment to the unemployed. I am not so sure America has gone the same route? Certainly in England most socialist ideas have been eroded, first during Thatcher, then subsequent governments. Blair should have put Britain back on the socialist track, which is what he was voted in for. He sold his electorate out. IMO the richest country in the world can be more similar to Cambodia, than say Sweden, Holand, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, etc.
I get the feeling a lot of right wing thinkers in the states would be quite happy to live in a kind of Cambodia. Where everything is broken down outside the walls of the enclave, but who gives a F, as long as the enclave and the route to work are safe and clean.
Hey, if they want to live in a clean, safe environment it's up to them, and not the government to sort themselves out, kinda thing.Whilst seemingly, at every money making opportunity, to cripple them from being able to get themselves out of the financial holes which have been dug for them. Hell, they've even gotten to making money out of their debt. :shock:

The closest place I could compare New York in 89 with on a street level, was perhaps Bombay in 82 except that Bombay was hot. So many black and white guys sitting on freezing streets in the snow begging with paper cups held up. Groups of guys sleeping in the street at night in the middle of the road, huddled over the steaming subway vents. There is even a movie where they have moved underground and live in Cambodian style slum shacks made of scavenged bits and pieces. It's a great documentary Samouth, a real eye opener for me and I would think for you too.(good music by DJ Shadow too :thumb: )

PSID data show that by age 60:

– 70% of the population will have experienced at least one year within the top 20th percentile of income;

– 53% of the population will have experienced at least one year within the top 10th percentile of income; and

– 11.1% of the population will have found themselves in the much-maligned 1% of earners for at least one year of their lives.
http://journals.plos.org/plosone/articl ... ne.0116370
In this study a new mobility methodology is proposed using life course concepts and life table statistical techniques. Panel data from a prospective national sample of the U.S. population age 25 to 60 are analyzed to estimate the extent of mobility associated with top percentiles in the income distribution. Empirical results suggest high mobility associated with top-level income. For example, 11 percent of the population is found to occupy the top one percentile for one or more years between the ages of 25 and 60. The study findings suggest that many experience short-term and/or intermittent mobility into top-level income, versus a smaller set that persist within top-level income over many consecutive years. Implications of the findings are discussed in terms of inequality buffering, opportunity versus insecurity, and the demographics of income inequality.

America's population is not so much rich as they are in debt that's why they appear to be rich because the owe tons of money to credit card companies.

Huge, mega huge hole^ bigger than even the American's and Chinese could dig if they got together to do it. Why dig for gold when you can set a bank up and just create money.

You are right, many Europeans i know don't really appreciate with the system in America especially when it comes to talk about how the government treats its homeless people. We all know that American gave a lot of money to other countries throughout the world, but the people of those countries don't really like USA. IMO, it would be better if they use some of those money to help settle down homeless people in the country. It is not nice when you are one of the rich country, but has the majority homeless people. Thanks for the link.

Re: Debt, it's so true. No one has any money in the U.S., crazy as it sounds. It's all credit cards and bullshit. I bought a car recently with cash and the salesman looked at me like I had horns coming out of my head. He was expecting me to "get financing straight" or to "get in contact with my bank" etc etc. Even in Cambodia buying a car with cash is considered normal, but in the U.S. it's all bank financing deals. I asked the salesman how many cars a month he sells as cash deals and he replied "You're the first one this YEAR."

It's really insanely stupid how the U.S. finances for everything and it is one of the main reasons I'm afraid to set up a future there. When the massive bubble comes crashing down it's not going to be pretty, and with the less than useful workforce who are all getting all their degrees (on finance) but have no real work experience have to get up and do some common sense hard work to earn their way instead of facebooking all day about how much they hate their job, it's going to be tragic to say the least.

I almost want to say I'd be happy to see it happen because it would send a nice swift kick to the American's guts to wake them up to the grossly overinflated lifestyle they've become accustomed to.

Perhaps we can all do it like Harry Hill and his brother with the mash scoop as posted elsewhere. A little bit at a time so as they don't notice.
