2 Iphones / 2 Watches stolen on Koh Rong Samloem - should we report it?

Post by Genti »

We were staying on Lazy Beach for our Honeymoon the last few days on Koh Rong Samloem. The manager of Lazy Beach recommended to leave all valuable on their safe deposit, because the bungalows have only a safety box with a normal lock. so we kept allmost all of our belongings at the safe deposit box at the restaurant.

On our last night (because they close for Khmer New Year) someone break to our bungalow and the bungalow from my father, in our bungalow they steal 1 iphone and the watch of my wife. and from the bungalow of my father his iphone and his watch and about 400$ in US-D and Swiss Francs (they left the Euros untouched).

It is our stupidy to leave the phones unattended in the bungalows, so they only one to blame is ourselve. my wife had no good feeling leaving the watch at the restaurant (a nice swiss Tissot, quit expensive) and my dad did not wear his watch for dinner and left it on the bed of the bungalow. the phones wear our spare phones, so we left them on the bungalow too.

at the end it mostly "money" and i hope the insurance will cover the loss (watches/phone, not the cash money). But 1 iphone has all the pictures and messages from my mum who died last year on it, so it has a high emotional value for my wife.

The iphone from my dad was online last night around 6pm on Sihanoukville, for about 15 minutes, then offline. our iphone is offline all the time. This morning we went the place in sihanoukville, it is a restaurant for khmer, no barangs eating/stay there. But of course no iphone.

Make it sense to report it to the police? I set alerts, in case the iphones go online again. then i could show the police the location, but now we stay in Phnom Penh for the next couple of days, before leaving to switzerland.

to bad we could not go yesterday evening to sihanoukville to catch the fu...g bastards....

Happy Khmer New Year

if they were insured YES, but you would have had to have reported it where they were stolen or lie and report they were stolen in PP

otherwise

We reported it to the insurance, so there is no problem.

But should we go to the police? They care when
We show them the location on the map on the notebook?

You don't have much to lose reporting it. You never know, by some miracle you may even get them back

Back in Switzerland since 3 weeks, here is a short update:

We try to report it in Phnom Penh, but the Police were not able or willing to do it and told us we have to report it in Sihanoukville. So we could not report it. And we had no time to travel back to Sihanoukville and try to report it there.

my father and i have different insurance companies, both payed without any discussion, after explaning the situation (island with no police, khmer new year and everything closed). So we got the some money back and the loss was not huge. Except the money they took from my father.

the phones were never again online, now we try to find the IMEI number to lock the phones at the cell carrier.

I hope for you that you have reported more lost items than it really happened...

Sorry the island had no local police. Usually the local cops know the crooks and sometimes stolen stuff can be returned if reported quickly enough.

Apple has a page that tracks all the stuff you’ve registered with Apple. Not sure if lists down to the IMEI numbers. But a call to Apple could list them as stolen at least.

Glad that insurance covered the loss.

I know its too late for you perhaps, however here is my advice:

Do not travel with expensive jewelry. Its too much of a burden of care. You can buy a nice looking fake watch which will last you the duration of your trip and cost you $20.

Get an older model phone for travel. Leave your good electronics at home if possible. If you must take a laptop, use a dedicated one for travel, make sure it is smaller, lighter and that for most times, you can carry it with you, or else its one small thing to worry about securing.

Getting a police report is almost an exercise in futility. I tried it once and they invited me to meet them at a restaurant where they also invited all their friends and expected me to pick up the tab. GF said no, which in a way was a mistake because that's when everything went south and it was an impossible waste of time and one of the more frustrating experiences I have ever had. It made me realize that the less you have to do with the police, the better off you are.
