Import tax/duty?

Post by troelshartmann »

After never experiencing this before, my latest 3 parcels from AliExpress have been stopped by customs before delivery and required proof of the order value before they released them.

These have all been low value and nothing was due. What is the threshold and what percentage tax/duty would be applied for something more expensive?

Under $50 value comes under the De Minimis rule and should be allowed in without any Customs entry or duty/tax. Up to $300 value can be a summary entry but with a 20% premium on the duty/tax payable. That's the official line anyway.

I thought Chinese goods were duty free.

If you have the correct certificate of origin than many goods from China (or other ASEAN origins) have a zero rate, however the fee for verification of that certificate costs more than what you would save in duty on small shipments
