because we have money go away you know it all expat lolSpigzy wrote: ↑Mon Jul 11, 2022 10:53 am Why hasn't anyone run with the "why on Earth would you want to import a car to Cambodia?" angle yet? Seriously, just don't do it - so many threads on this. If you love your car so much, you wouldn't dream of bringing it here (my situation), the cost is prohibitive, nobody here knows how to fix anything beyond a Toyota, and even then very badly.
The only argument I think of against that advice would be a customised vehicle for a disabled person. Given this country doesn't even have pavements, I can't believe that could be the case!
Re: Import a car.
In case some didn't know, there are dealers who will order you a car from the U.S. of your choice backed by AutoCheck, etc.
My niece did this with her Prius, bought it from a dealer in Southern California where the dealer in Phnom Penh had connections to, and then they orgainized all the shipping and taxes beforehand.
Car was actually quite nice when it arrived (2 months later), and it was around 10-15% more than you'd expect to pay for a no history salvaged rebuilt car here.

Re: Import a car.
Does any other country in the world charge as high an import tax/fees for cars as Cambodia does?
Re: Import a car.
Off the top of my head Vietnam and Singapore come to mind.

I did it a couple of times. Used a local freight agent. I paid the published tax and duty though. At least I knew what I was getting, and that was worth the high tax and duty. That said, I wouldn't do it again. There are good new cars around at the same price as a used high-end import, e. g. Ford Everest, Mazda CX9, Toyota SUVs, if you don't insist on driving a so-called luxury car like the BMW, Audi, MB, Range Rover.
It takes people in the loop to import salvaged cars, not private individuals.

As we all know, some westerners have a strong attachment to their material goods, and many attempt to replicate their lifestyle when they become expats by bringing along all their stuff. Some will even give their car its own name.Spigzy wrote: ↑Mon Jul 11, 2022 10:53 am Why hasn't anyone run with the "why on Earth would you want to import a car to Cambodia?" angle yet? A colleague of mine so many years ago used to repeat one of his various mantras, "less is more".
Another one (unrelated) was "If there's any doubt, it's a man".
I think we can all agree that these are words of wisdom to live by as expats.

There is nothing wrong with giving cars & motorbikes names. They work much better when a soul is attached than without, from my experience!

Re: Import a car.
I shipped a used (very good condition) Toyota 4 Runner from Dubai, UAE to Cambodia several years ago (inside a small shipping container with a lot of household furniture, clothes, tools, electronics, etc.). When I went to the port at Snooky to claim it I was shocked at the tax and various other import fees the Cambodian government was asking (about 3-4 times what I had paid for the Toyota). So I just took all of the other things and let them have the Toyota. Fortunately my employer in Dubai had paid for the shipping..
