How do you respond when people tell you their financial problems?

all the kids selling post cards, books etc at Angkor wat are very nice
They ask, "you buy post card, book?"
u tell them "NO", and they respond,
"OK, maybe tomorrow?"
but its all done with smiles

Westerners like my self make 5000 USD a month as a labourer in our home country's easy.

And with the amount of hours they work it would be close to 10 k a month AUD in Australia .

And you guys are talking about holding back 2.5 usd cents

You probably do this anyway, but as a general rule, if people talk about their financial problems when you're out socializing and you're not being directly hit for a loan, then empathize about times being tough, commiserate, and pay them a meal, some drinks, or whatever you can afford or feel like. That's ok. That's what friends are for. If they want a loan they will probably ask you for it.

But what you are really asking, Roz, is how to stop feeling so uncomfortable, isn't it ? I think we have to work out that for ourselves. There's no one answer fits all.
