How to get your cat/dog into Europe - INFO

Post by Advocatus Diaboli »

How to get your pussycat (or dog) into Europe (England is NOT really Europe, and therefore the following is NOT valid for England !!!!)

1. go to “Agrovet” in Phnom Penh and get your cat chipped (transponder) . Agrovet has crazy prices, but as far as I know they are the only one who are licensed to do it. The transponder will cost you around $ 100

2. your cat needs to be vaccinated against rabies. This must be done by an authorised veterinarian (again Agrovet for $ 40). A local vet would do that for around $ 3 incl. vaccination pass (but it's not allowed).

3. The cat must be at least 12 weeks old at the date the vaccine is administered;
the date of administration of the vaccine must not precede the date of marking or reading of the transponder;
*the period of validity of the vaccination starts not less than 21 days from the completion of the vaccination protocol for the primary vaccination, and any subsequent vaccination was carried out within the period of validity of the preceding vaccination.

4. the cat must undergo a rabies antibody titration test

*the test must be carried out on a sample collected by an authorised veterinarian (again Agrovet) at least 30 days after the date of vaccination and not less than three months before the date of movement;

*the test must measure a level of neutralising antibody to rabies virus in serum equal to or greater than 0,5 IU/ml; if there are not enough antibodies in the blood you got to redo vaccination and blood test)

*the test must be performed in an approved laboratory somewhere in Europe (there are several -Agrovet will choose the most expensive of course).

*Taking the blood sample and testing at European lab will cost you around $ 500

5. the cat must be accompanied by

*an animal health certificate (Agrovet – will be completed only if the antibody test checks out)

*completed and issued by an official veterinarian, or by an authorised veterinarian and subsequently endorsed by the competent authority; (Agrovet)

*documenting the alpha-numeric code displayed by the transponder, the details of vaccination against rabies, the details of the blood sampling.

*valid for 10 days from the date of issue by the official veterinarian until the date of the documentary and identity checks at the travellers' points of entry designated by Member States. (This means you have to fly directly into one of the member states)

*a written declaration completed by the owner or an authorised person regarding the non-commercial nature of the movement. (There is a PDF form online)

*the cat must pass through a travellers’ point of entry designated by Member States. The owner must, at the time of entry, contact the competent authority present at the point of entry for the purposes of the documentary and identity checks.

Europeans can make your life difficult – it's easier to get a fuckin' crocodile into the EU than a pussycat.

You also can check here: http://ec.europa.eu/food/animal/liveani ... ird_en.htm

The thead above is just for general info and costs to be expected.

Again:
Transponder = $ 100
Vaccination = $ 40
Antibody test = $ 500

So think first before you get a pet in Cambodia because bringing them into Europe is not only quite expensive, but also time consuming and requires a lot of planning. Airlines not always accept pets on board, respectively you have to get a permit from the airlines in advance and of course they are going to charge you (I had to pay $ 50 per kilo if I remember correctly, and my cat weighs 7 kg).
I did it once about a year ago or so, and it was a pain in the ass.

In respect of an over regulated Europe the following: Commission Regulation (EC) No. 2257 - the curving degree of a banana :bow: :facepalm: :fool:

Quality standards for bananas, also known informally as bendy banana law, is a European Union regulation specifying minimum standards for bananas. The minimum size is a length of 14 cm and a thickness (grade) of 2.7 cm. It specifies minimum standards for specific quality classifications of bananas. The regulation requires that bananas may not have an "abnormal curvature" :ROFL2:
(EC) No. 2257 is a prime example of needless European bureaucracy - the entire EU parliament was busy for several month to pass that bill.

Alternative solution. Apply spade to pet's head. Have it stuffed. Export it anywhere with none of the above expense or problems. If you want it to still have a personality, insert one of those talking boxes they put in teddy bears. This will also save you a fortune in pet food, cat litter, vaccinations, etc.

Thanks AD. This will be good info for some, but obviously not for all.

What do you think if I do all the above and take my cat to Australia. When I get there, I can tell them I thought Austria and Australia were the same thing.
