How to distinguish the different native speakers of English

Post by Samouth »

i have talked to many native speakers of English such as American, English, Australian, Canadian and New Zelander, however i actually couldn't tell where are from before they told me. That make me look really stupid. The only thing i can tell is that they are native speaker of English. However, what i want is the ability to find out where exactly they come from, before they tell me.
Therefore, are there any tips or clues to distinguish between, American, English, Aussie, Canadian and Kiwi? Like thier accent, tone and some slangs they would use to give us clues about where they are from.

Khmer people usually think I'm German or Dutch. My English must be so poor that they don't even think it is my native language.

Here's an easy way. An American will say 'beer' with a hard R sound. An Australian will say it more like 'beeah'. An Englishman will insist on saying can or pint.

I'd kill someone for a gin and tonic right now.

If they say "mate" every other word, they are from Australia or England. Americans don't say mate. As for England/UK, the use of "what do you fancy" is always there in addition to drinking warm beer and not bathing. Aussies also tend to be tall. Canadian and American English is the same I think, both accent and vocabulary. However, the Canadians won't have exposure to ghetto English nor the African twang still in African Americans, "gimme" etc..

I almost forgot....Aussies have sex with sheep. So if you see a guy having sex with an animal, you can figure he's an Aussie.
