Some chain hotels have day rates that will automatically pop up on the website if you pick arrival on the 29th and departure on the 29th

Have you asked the airline for a free hotel? Since you are travelling business class, the airlines will usually give you a stopover hotel free. Often only if you ask in advance and talk to the right people. I dont know about Philippine Airlines. Emirates always gives free hotel in Dubai even for Economy Class.

I have a trip coming up which involves transiting through Manilla en route to Vancouver, but my arrival and departure times are horrible. I could end up paying for 5 nights for what is actually just two overnight sleeps.

The more I look at them, the worse they get.

Has anyone got any ideas about how to manage this, any tricks that I am missing?

Visit #1

I arrive in Manilla on 1 March at 04:40 so will arrive at the hotel about 06:00

I leave Manilla at 19:00 on the same day so will need my room until about 3pm

(They are going to want to charge for the previous night and might then want to empty the room by 12pm or it's an extra night)

Visit #2

I arrive in Manilla on Tuesday 28th April at 03:30 so will arrive at the hotel about 05:00

I leave Manilla on Thursday 30th April at 22:10 so will need the room until about 18:00

(Again, they are going to want to charge for the 27th/28th/29th and quite possibly the 30th because of the 6pm checkout.)
Looking forward to your posts about Canada and the trip. It sounds great. I hope the inconveniences along the way are delightful.

Actually Mish, the trip is just 9 days in Vancouver (visiting my son). Thereafter it's 1 week in Mexico City and then 2 weeks in Medellin Colombia up to the end of March. Month 2 in undecided but likely to involve Panama City, Costa Rica and then, maybe, the very dodgy places like Nicaragua, El Salvador etc. We'll see. I'll start a thread in the On The Road section and post a few pics.

This is the nature of my business. Early hours check in, evening checkout same day. All too often for a 10hr stop.
The bigger hotel groups are more aware, especially with their airport hotels. Contact them directly, if needs be.
Early check-in, late check out fees may be worth it.
