Have you been evicted because Chinese will pay more?

Post by Brendianne »

I have Heard this is happening a lot in Sihanoukville. People with leases are being kicked out of their homes because the Chinese have offered more money to rent.
Wondering how much the rent prices have risen in 1 year?

It's true. They just told me I have to leave the hotel I've been staying at on and off for years immediately, as they rented it to the Chinese for 2 years.
The entire hotel with about 25 rooms. They did mention something 6 days ago but I though it wasn't serious, still it's a shock.
This is in Sihanoukville it's being taken over by the Chinese in a major way, this has to be some concerted effort between the governments of the two countries,
no way this is happening spontaneously. Really really sucks. This place is developing backwards, I swear.

Yeah, that does suck, but it's nothing new as the Chinese have been doing this for centuries. There's a Vietnamese saying that was often uttered back in the day that went something like this..."I'd rather eat French shit for a few years than eat Chinese shit for the rest of my life"- meaning of course that, once you let the Chinese in, they aren't leaving.

I personally have no problem with the Chinese. It's the fact they're turning Sihanoukville into this shit casino backwater for their gamblers and KTV dens, as opposed to this country looking to develop
on the international tourism stage, which it absolutely has the potential for. The other issue is this development is not spontaneous, it's obviously a high level gov't organized thing between the communist chinese and the ruling party. They're taking over entire hotels on a massive scale to move in their employees here. It's just wrong, they're butchering the tourism industry to become a Chinese backwater of vice.
Chinese businesses also don't even bother to post their name in English, that's how much they care about serving international clientele from the other 194 countries in the world besides their own.
Is this going to help real Cambodians? No way. It's going to hurt domestic tourism too as the prices will go up for everyone. Poor Cambodians are welcome to send their daughters to work at the brothels. What a shame.

Yeah, not like what Murika did in Pattaya, right? A Murikan backwater of vice...but that's OK, but Sinville is somehow immoral? The Philippines, US bases in Japan? Come on, be fair.

wtf would they care about English? They're catering to Chinese. The law only requires them to have notices in Khmer first and then whatever other language. Not sure if you noticed, but we're in Asia.

Can you explain why 'it's just wrong', but when the US did it, it was OK?

Colonialism is not better because it's Chinese. Just because one person/country acts like an asshole, that is not an excuse to behave the same way.
(And btw the quote was from superferret not Ronny. Just saying. )

My quoting messes up, apologies to everyone in advance.

Agree 100% AM, but Ronny should whine about his own country doing it first, they have a longer, far more egregious list.

When he's willing to do that, it makes his whine more creditable, you agree?

He's a yankophile republican, they can do no wrong...but if anybody else does similar, all of a sudden it's a heinous crime.

Ok first of all, America did not do Pattaya, it was the Thais who sold themselves out to the US soldiers to an extent no other nations ever did. Were they forced to prostitute themselves? Of course not.
and it's the Thais who continue selling themselves out
to this very day like no other nation, to whoever has money, now more Russians and Indians. Angeles city comes in a distant second.
You can't compare that to Sihanoukville. Sihanoukville is the premier beach destination of a country, and it has the potential to develop into
a family friendly international recognized resort for Cambodia, instead of a backwater for Chinese casinos, chinese guys cheating on their wives, and illegal gambling. IF you spend some time here
you'll know that many Asian families are destroyed by Asian men's gambling habits.
Also they use Sihanoukville to run their illegal online gambling operations. Again, illegal. Banned in China so they come here.
The problem is they're butchering the tourism industry by taking over entire hotels. I just got kicked out of the hotel I stayed in for 3-4 years on and off, I can no longer go there because the Chinese
took it over to run their illegal online gambling. I'm paying twice as much now and don't even know where to go now. I'm actually doing some work here to help the poorest of Cambodians, and now I got kicked out so these leeches can do their
utterly useless, illegal activity, that does not help Cambodia one single bit. How is that not wrong?
As for writing the names of the businesses, there are 194 other nations besides China that have a different language, and English is the lingua franca for those other 194. This is not China, this is an international
destination, if you come here to open a business you should cater to either Khmers only or to Khmers+ the international community. That applies to any nationality in my view.
