I have a lot of questions

Post by KornMermaid »

Hey guys, I've been wanting to move to Cambodia (thinking Phnom Penh) for a while now and have a bunch of questions.

I was there in 2017 alone as a female and found it relatively safe. How is it now? Has it gotten more dangerous or has crime increased at all?

How is health care? Is there access to the same medications as in America?

How do you do your taxes?

Is meat okay to purchase in the markets?

Have you ever had incidents with corrupt law enforcement?

Are there any places besides Siem Reap, Pp, or Battambang you recommend to live? Or visit?

What do you like about living in cambodia? What do you dislike?

Are there a ton of bugs in houses/ apartments?

Have you experienced any shady tuk tuk drivers? (I didn't have any problems when I was there)

And lastly are there any other suggestions or recommendations you think I should know about?

Thanks!

Some medications like Ritalin are illegal here. Almost anything amphetamine based is illegal.
I never buy meat in markets, I go to shops.

I think if you are the type of person who needs answers to these questions, Cambodia is not for you long term.
Despite what angsta states, it’s clear from reading through his posts that angsta supports the free FreePalestine movement.

Don't drive a car; in the recent weeks road dividers have seem to get magnetic - especially at night... Talking about night: bring in or chain on everything between 00:00 and 05:00, except you don't need it any more.

Healthcare?
Locals go to the witch doctor, wealthy people fly to Thailand, Viet Nam or Singapore. I dive somewhere in between with HOPE (well, yes, hope is one way to get healthy again, but I am talking about the organization)
How do you do your taxes?
Company pays them for my income, afaik there is nothing else you need to do
Is meat okay to purchase in the markets?
Once your body is used to all that local bacteria (takes a few months), there is no better way to buy. On the other hand, except you are on Keto, there are not many reasons to cook yourself, given an already prepared (local) meal rarely costs more than $2.
Have you ever had incidents with corrupt law enforcement?
No
Are there any places besides Siem Reap, Pp, or Battambang you recommend to live? Or visit?
Kampot
What do you like about living in cambodia? What do you dislike?
General positive thinking atmosphere.
Short time thinking.
Are there a ton of bugs in houses/ apartments?
Ants, cockroaches, milipede, mosquitoes. Basically the usual stuff in usual amounts. The higher level your appartment is, the less it gets...
Have you experienced any shady tuk tuk drivers? (I didn't have any problems when I was there).
No
And lastly are there any other suggestions or recommendations you think I should know about?
Stay here for a couple of months first. It is a difference to visit a place as a tourist, or if you stay somewhere
Driving on Cambodian roads is just like playing a classic arcade top scroller. The only difference is a force feedback controller, the limitation to only one life and the inability to restart, once Game Over

Healthcare is basic at its' best, non existent at some places and simply bad beyond belief in other places. People relying on regular good healthcare best avoid this place or bring a large sum to pay for overpriced basic service.

Med's are a bit of a hit and miss. Contact Pharmacie de la Gare in Phnom Penh to check if your specific meds are available. A lot is, but loads are not for some reason.

Whenever you need a service from the Cambodian government or you've broken the law you're f#cked unless you know the language, they know you, you know a person high up or a few of those.

I have faced corruption when...

I needed a birth certificate for my kid.
I wanted the Latin version of my kid's name spelled different than the office guy suggested.
I needed to renew my visa (each year)
I lost my Cambodian driving license and applied for a replacement
Etc.

But generally, in day to day life, you won't notice the corruption that much. Just stay low.

How do you do your taxes?

If you're American you file your taxes as always and your employer in Cambodia will take care of your local taxes.

If you don't have a Cambodian employer you will be in the twilight zone and might try to seek professional advice or just stay low and hope for the best. Long term ordinary visa might be harder to obtain in that case on money might be needed to grease the wheels .

Worth a visit are for sure (other than the ones already mentioned):

Kompong Cham
Sem Monorom
Ban Lung (for the Crater lake and waterfalls)
Kratie
Some natural parcs

If you like a slow life some might suitable to live in.

Yes. I guess they're everywhere. Most are annoying but harmless but if you choose to live more rural you might also experience poisonous ones like certain kinds of centipedes (have also seen small ones in Phnom Penh though), spiders (huntsman is very common) and scorpions.

Mozzies are your biggest enemy though. If you choose to live here the question isn't if but when you're going to contract malaria or dengue. Took nine years in my case, but less for many I know.
