If you're paying around $30-$50 a night, then you would likely be staying at a hotel not a guesthouse. And just about all of them in that price range would have an in room safe. I'd recommend just looking for a hotel/guesthouse in the price range/area you want to stay and then confirm on the hotel's website or on booking.com that it has an in room safe.

Just a tip for people who stay in hotels overnight and need to get up early to catch a flight.

When you go to bed and have your passport etc in the safe, put your shoes in as well. you will never forget your passport.

Haha, good one. I just use the deadbolt and take everything out of the safe the night before. This also protects me from a safe malfunction in the morning that could delay me if the safe won't open 2.5 hours before my flight.

I don't stay in hotels much but pretty much anytime I do there's a safe in the room which I never use anyway as I travel light and don't have a $6000 camera or anything. They always seem to have disclaimers nearby, stating that you shouldn't trust the room safe and it's not their responsibility if it gets robbed, so you should instead leave all your important stuff in the reception safe. Even the roughest guest house or hostel will have a safe, whether you trust them to take care of your stuff is another matter. I've never had any problems in that regard myself, but I'm sure others have, any horror stories out there?

Good tip. Also good to know for travelers, hotel room safes ALL have a hidden key slot to open the safe, either for fraudulent reasons, because the batteries are flat, or the guest forgets the combination they set. Some people will tell you they all have a master code (0000, which is bollocks) and some might, but if you check the safe closely and pull away anything that looks like unnecessary plastic trim or branding, you'll find the key slot.

He wants to stay near the Riverside, not Street 172. He's interested in hookers, not overdosing.
