Grocery Stores and Delivery Kampot-Kep
Grocery Stores and Delivery Kampot-Kep
I am thinking about moving to Kep. But I visited Kampot last week and noticed that the grocery stores are not really so great...
Question 1:
Is the "new" Daily Meat shop (yellow building) on the corner shuttered right now? Or is it still open? I missed it.
Question 2:
Are there any grocery delivery services that will bring you a case of UHT milk at discount, etc, in Kampot? (My pal in Kep said there was, but I have not been able to search or find them online...)
~~~~~
Observations: a can of tuna costs $2.00 in all the shops I saw in Kampot, but the same brand costs only $1.60 in Sihanoukville... Also, you can still get fresh choice salmon, pork tenderloin (not frozen for months) and other stuff in Sihanoukville Samudera, but I did not see those in Kampot. The fresh spice selection at Samudera makes every single shop in Kampot look like a joke, unless you only want to buy pepper only, lol..
So what gives? There are so many more Western expats in Kampot than Sihanoukville, but grocery shopping is still better in Sihanoukville for foreigners...
I guess most shop owners in Kampot will be glad to supply anything you like or miss..provided you will buy it once available..just need to ask. Demand creates supply. And stop whingin that any product will cost a little more in Kampot. If the shop owners cant make a reasonable profit, it wont be on their shelves.
work is for people who cant find truffles
They opened FairPlus Supermarket last year in Kampot (was it even two branches, both side of bridges?). I have never been in the stores in Kampot but at least their stores in Sihanoukville and Phnom Penh have same selection and same prices. And in those stores they have somewhat decent variety of products. Case of UHT milk, can tuna and fresh meats etc., credit card accepted and so on.
One negative with FairPlus is that there is no consistency with what they stock, you get used to buying certain products then suddenly they are no longer stocking some of them, and they stock new products for a couple of weeks and then you never see them again.rogerrabbit wrote: ↑Tue Feb 23, 2021 5:47 pm They opened FairPlus Supermarket last year in Kampot (was it even two branches, both side of bridges?). That aside it’s a pretty good store, not as good as Samudera used to be, but neither is Samudera.
Actually, if one likes cooking local foods, like clam soup with basil, or fried shrimp and fish... and eating rice... then I suppose Kep is fine with me. BTW, in Kep, the French bread shop is still open on 33, offering coffee and croissants... pricey but good quality...
Re: Grocery Stores and Delivery Kampot-Kep
My opinion: The difference with shopping for groceries in Sihanoukville and Kampot is that while SHV has one-stop western shopping at Samdura (but not much competition, and the vegetables are shite so you need to go to the market), in Kampot a shopping trip usually means stopping at 3-4 shops if you want the best and cheapest. You can find most things you need in Kampot, but you need to shop around. (There are at least three different prices for tuna in three different shops.)
It's more time consuming, but once you know your way around, it's a more leisurely way of shopping. You see people you know, you stop for a chat or a drink.
if you only want eat local food, everywhere is the same, although Kep has a hands up on seafood
Its when you want anything imported or produced.
Cheeses, fresh milk, packaged meats, supermarket style meat selection, ( vs market cuts) many canned goods, pasta, etc etc
