A Good Doctor

Post by ruralvoice »

Most of my posts on this forum about Cambodia are negative. However, fair is fair and when I come across something good I want to share it with the readers of this forum.

Thanks to Stroppy Chops, a former and much missed contributor to CEO I found out about Mercy Clinic and more particularly about Dr. Chap Modich in Phnom Penh.

Prior to going there I had wasted time and money with doctors at the Kampong Cham Hospital, Calmette Hospital, Virginia Kill Hospital,
and one very highly touted foreign doctor in PP, and Pasteur Institute. Without going into a detailed itinerary allow me to say only that this was a serious infection that I had been trying to find a medical solution to for around a year and a half.

The infection,Pseudomonas aeruginosa, is one of those highly antibiotic resistant bacteria that you don't want to share your body with. It ate through the cutaneous and subcutaneous layers of flesh, but didn't reach the bone thank God. The infection is gone, but I am still dealing with the ravage it left.

I will avoid the temptation to further indulge in my litany of bad health and bad health care, this is after all a recommendation for a fine doctor.
I recommend him for the following reasons.
1) He is understanding and flexible. For instance he allowed me to take the vaccine home and let the village nurse administer it twice a day thus allowing me to not spend unnecessary money on hospitalization. But only after I had 1iv in his office to check for allergic reaction to the antibiotic.
2) While not so important to me his English is excellent. And he thoroughly explains everything.
3) He gave me the feeling that he really cared about my well-being. No other Cambodia doctor made me feel that way.
4)He also found an antidote for a second problem that I had had for three years and which no Cambodian doctor could cure.
4)I have been comparing him to Cambodian doctors, in truth I would have been lucky to find him in my home country.
5)He is a modest man who works within the parameters of his knowledge. If a patient needs a procedure that he feels others do better, he finds good ones for you to go to.

Mercy Clinic is located near Psar Olympic.

Wow, if that is one of the flesh eating viruses, you were very lucky, as from what I know it is quite common to have to amputate the limb if the antibiotics don't work.

Yep, that's it. Two other doctors in PP wanted to amputate. I was lucky in that I found the doctor I wrote about and that the infection had not reached the bone. I have been told by Aussie expats that this bacteria is not unknown in Northern Australia.

There is one fact I should have added to my.lengthy recommendation. Dr. Modich is not at the clinic on Tuesdays and the clinic is closed on Sundays.

That's OK, I never get sick on a Sunday.

I honestly do not remember how much. I suspect that if you could prove financial need they would try to accommodate you. I do know Dr. Modich helped me cut corners where possible. It really isn't a for profit clinic, but they can't afford to run at a loss either.
Your best bet is to go to the clinic in person and speak to.Dr. Modich.
