In the end, I didn't get around to getting riel, but I did remember I had brought a big supply of small CARABINERS from home. On a previous visit here I had a "carabiner belt" and quite often the children, as well as adults, would show great interest in them. I think they were not as readily available here at that time. So, carabiners it will be. Again, thanks everyone!

In the provinces?

Was there an incredible rate of provincial inflation?

Last time it was 500 Riel notes for each child and 1000 Riel each adult.

Of course it was followed by taking them to pizza/restaurant. So I guess it works out.
You're being laughed at, but you're right. 5000r for each kid is a bit much, in the boonies they can buy a (small) bag of snacks for 500r. So the gift equates to 10 snacks. Don't forget the word will spread soon and before you know it all the village kids will come to collect 'their' 5k.

Daily wage is in the boonies typically 20-30 k. So 50 k for each adult is also pretty steep.

I think OP should differentiate between the adults in the family he's staying with, and the others. For the others just bring some food to sample, or buy a case of beer. For the family he's staying with he'd have to differentiate between the adults. The adult daughter for instance should get less than the in-living grandfather. 50k as the highest gift is more than acceptable.
I think the actual amounts which are considered appropriate depend a lot on the standard of living of the family in question. Your snack example is great, some kids are usesd to (and happy with) that 500 riel snack you mentioned no doubt, others buy bags of potato chips that cost a few thousand riel each.

I don't quite get your distinction between "the family" and "the others", why would YOU ever give anything direcrly to the latter? Assuming you aren't Santa Claus, you give to the family you visit, so THEY buy something to get a party going and then of course others usually come over and join in.
Cambodian families are clear as mud, especially for beginners.

I obviously assume that you know a member of the family you're visiting, I don't visit random strangers bearing gifts. And that means getting introduced to other family members when I arrive. How difficult can it be? That wasn't exactly a challenge when I was "a beginner", visiting the first Khmer family many years.ago.

Ask the OP, it seems like he's bringing stuff for more than just a few family members.

There are different arrangements.
Only know of one place in Sihanoukville that sells them though there must be others if you look around.

Izzy wrote: Wed Jul 26, 2023 9:25 am Thanks everyone for the great suggestions! So far I have marshmallows (which would have never crossed my mind, but I love it), Nutella, biscuit tins, small bottle each of rum and vodka, and an assortment of mini, individually wrapped Snickers and Kit Kats (hopefully won't be melted!), along with mini, individually wrapped assorted biscuits and rice crackers, and single serve coffee Latte packets. I will be getting some 5000 riel bills as well (such a great idea--can't go wrong with that one!). That pretty much fills up my available space, so I'll have to keep the other suggestions for my next visit.

IF anyone knows where to find WALKER'S SHORTBREAD (typically with a distinctive red plaid background on the package) I would love to add that to my goodies, as I know that these are one of the family favorites, but have not been able to locate any.

Thanks again!

Come on my beer drinking brother it's not like I killed someone, 6-pack is plenty enough.

I think having only 6 beers is what causes so many problems here , 6 is not plenty at all
