Re: Flu Shot
It was cytokine storms:stevenjb wrote: ↑Fri Oct 05, 2018 3:43 pm 1918 Flu (Spanish Flu)
Health and Hygiene were not hall marks during this time period.
From Wikipedia:
"More recent investigations, mainly based on original medical reports from the period of the pandemic, found that the viral infection itself was not more aggressive than any previous influenza, but that the special circumstances (malnourishment, overcrowded medical camps and hospitals, poor hygiene) promoted bacterial superinfection that killed most of the victims typically after a somewhat prolonged death bed"
Note: most victims succumbed to bacterial pneumonia following influenza virus infection -

Amazing that it has been 100 years ( 1918 to 2018 ) since this out break
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cytokine_release_syndrome
It is believed that cytokine storms were responsible for the disproportionate number of healthy young adult deaths during the 1918 influenza pandemic, which killed 50 to 100 million people.[12] In this case, a healthy immune system may have been a liability rather than an asset. Preliminary research results from Hong Kong also indicated this as the probable reason for many deaths during the SARS epidemic in 2003.[13] Human deaths from the bird flu H5N1 usually involve cytokine storms as well.[14] Cytokine storm has also been implicated in hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.

Re: Flu Shot
Love to know how they identified Cytokine as the possible cause when the first Cytokine, interferon, was only discovered in 1957.cptrelentless wrote: ↑Fri Oct 05, 2018 10:18 pmIt is believed that cytokine storms were responsible for the disproportionate number of healthy young adult deaths during the 1918 influenza pandemic, which killed 50 to 100 million people.[12] In this case, a healthy immune system may have been a liability rather than an asset. Did they carry out an autopsy on the 100 million people?
Interesting that Dr. Osterholm who wrote the original article in a discussion paper in the New England Journal of Medicine offers no conclusive link or proof to this, just a picture of the Cytokine stages. His comment has been taken as proof but none was given.

You don't stop riding when you get old, you get old when you stop riding
Re: Flu Shot
Cytokine, bacteria, virus - my point was hygiene and correlation to flu outbreaks. Keep clean, keep healthy.

Re: Flu Shot
I am seriously contemplating getting the flu shot. And then I mean contemplating.
Because the flu shot is something different from clinic to clinic. Or that is what I have heard, anyways.
I want to know how long the flu shot lasts and immunizes the body.
Last time I did that I just flew out the door right after the shot was given.
But its been years and now I am not so sure anymore.
It is quite painful and to be honest a bother to go out and actually do. I guess it is easier to just say yes I did but not actually to have done. So that is a no, I have not done so this year.
I mean tomorrow morning might be a good time to go out and get the shot.
I am just so unsure if it is safe or not. Whether the shot has been true and tested. That is what I want to know.
How safe is it?

Re: Flu Shot
Not so much about me agreeing with the article, but those neatly laid out cons are simply incorrect. For example, there is no proven connection between Alzheimer's and vaccines. Of course, he forgot to mention that the only scientist who claimed there to be a connection has no license. Also, average protection vs flu is 50-60%, which is pretty good considering that without vaccine, likelihood of catching flu is 20%. The only tru con from article is that getting a vaccine is a pain.TOG wrote:Biased in that you do not agree with it. The pros and cons were neatly laid out. You pay your money and you takes your chance.ristoa wrote: ↑Fri Oct 05, 2018 4:17 amThat's a very biased anti-vaccine article. The cons have been presented without numbers and background, and they have mostly been busted as myths long time ago.TOG wrote:You may want to read this unbiased pro/con article.

Also, do you really trust the source of the shot you are about to have?
I last had a flu shot 4 years ago and then went down with a completely different strain of flu. Since then, no shot and no flu....Just avoid anyone who is sneezing and coughing.

Who knows what they are putting into your arm at some of these clinics? Asia is renowned for it's fake drugs (mainly from the PRC).
The attached link explains how the wrong type of flue vaccine has no effect on other strains.

As per Stevenjb's post, prevention by being sensible is the best way forward, not relying on a jab which may not even be connected to the strain of flue that goes around. Just about every OAP I see in our area gets flue even though they have had a flue jab. Better to avoid those who have it.

There may be a connection between Alzheimer's and viruses (Herpes virus) -- I have been watching too many TED Talks lately
