First time in Cambodia

Post by nordictraveller »

Hello
I am going to Cambodia for the fist time try to check out if this is the place I want to retire - I been coming to Thailand many years - but I see thing change there the last year and not to the better- seen from a westerners view.. some recommanded me to go to Cambodia -
I have many questions - as I try to check what is better/easyer than from Thailand where nothing is allowed except from sit and drink . the hole day.
I heard it is possible to work in Cambodia and to start a bussines. .
What about a place to live - a flat ?
I am sure many here has been in Thailand for many years also .. so it can be interesting to know how do you feel here in Cambodia ?
vs Thailand ?
what is better / not so good ?
Price level ? the same ?
Ladies : How abt finding - dating a cambodian lady ? is it difficult ? - I dont mean bar girls or hostess - but a " normal" girl..
How are they compaired to Thais ( which I find irresponsible and unreliable>) - I meet a few thai women but all of the has been unreliable.
Any advise - welcomed. thank you-

Most businesses lose money. So it is probably best not to start a business, unless you are one of the few who can run it outstandingly well. Maybe get a job working for someone else. Be aware they are restricting what work foreigners are allowed to do now.

I suggest date either a university student, or a well educated girl who is already working. Good girls wont sleep with you before they are married. Girls who sleep with men before they are married, are in it for the money, so it may cost your, and will probably sleep with the next man too. So you can date a girl and not rush her into the bedroom, or you can give her a long term committent, or you can hand over money.

It is easy to meet good girls, but many foreigners may find it difficult.

Cambodians dont use time efficiently, which you may call unreliable.

Among the people I know here, very few have lived in Thailand.

you'd be surprised, than again it depends on what you mean by a few ( 2, 3, 5?) more than a few LIVE currently in Thailand :beer3:

Given the pace of change in both countries I think you might be struggling to find many on this forum that have spent enough time living in both countries recently to give you sound current advice. When I was considering Cambodia as a potential retirement alternative 4 years ago I spent a year in country spending 4 months each in Sihanoukville, Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, I felt that was long enough to assess the pros and cons of each place. Since Sihanoukville is probably off the cards these days and since you mention work I'd just recommend spending a year split between the other 2 and speak to people on the ground and see for yourself. If you don't know anyone in country the ease of finding a social circle may be one of the more important longer term retirement issues.
