External Hard Drive

Post by Doc67 »

I need to buy one. Either 500gb or 1TB.

Can anyone recommend a shop near Riverside/Central Market where I can get one of good quality and at a sensible price and any recommendations as to a good brand and the likely costs too.

As always, many thanks in advance...

For that you'd have to specify type, 'regular' or SSD.

If you use it for regular backups use SSD. I bought one nearly two years ago and doing the daily backup takes seconds instead of minutes with a (USB-C) SSD. Well worth the money.

I've been using Sandisk Extreme Portable external SSDs, 1TB and 500GB. Highly rated are Samsung T7's, 1TB and 500 GB. Apparently Samsung is faster than Sandisk but Sandisk is more rugged. I installed an internal Crucial SSD in an older laptop a couple of years ago and have had no problems with it. Prices for 1 TB range from about $180 to $210. Don't know the local prices in PP.

I am buying for a friend so I can transfer some of my TV collections onto it.

I already have two Seagate ones, both 1TB HDD and the speed of them are ok.

SSD is much more durable but also more expensive. If your're going to be carrying it around and there's a risk of it being bumped/jostled/dropped definitely get SSD. I paid $175 for a 2TB SSD from Aliexpress in late 2019 (it's my main one in my laptop). And it's a noname one but works perfectly.

If not going to be moved around a lot, do you have any old laptop hard drive kicking around? You can just get an enclosure for it for a few dollars. Format it and use it as an external drive.

It's going to kept at home and occasionally brought back to me to be filled up with more TV crap. I think a $50 one will be ok, any data lost can easily be replaced.

No old laptop lying around, and wouldn't know where to start, other than unplugging it first.

OK well just pick one up from Davy or any computer shop. Probably cheaper to buy a drive and a separate enclosure than to buy a pre-packaged external drive.
