I think the charges depend on the amount of money being transferred. If he sends a large amount of money the fees may be significantly higher.

Like you say, ask the bank.

You may find out how much the sending bank charges, but you may not know how much the receiving bank will charge.

Banks rip people off big time over international transfers. Look at the cost as a percentage of money being transferred. Most people only go on a holiday on a rare occasion and dont care.

you can do a telegraphic transfer by ABA for about usd 20
gold is not reportable as far as i know

Telegraphic transfer wouldn't be expensive for USD to USD transfers.
Gets expensive when there's currency exchange involved due the crap rate the banks give.
I think the issue here is declaring where the money came from, and any tax implications in your home country ?
