Electrical questions. Proper electrical wiring?

Post by AE86 »

I'm having a place built and have some electrical "issues". After an hour of trying to explain that we wanted a properly grounded main panel and 3 prong electrical outlets we thought it was pretty straight forward, but of course I should have known better and watched them before the completed the job. All our outlets were installed as the cheap 5000 riel 2 prong plugs and the breaker panel of course is not grounded. So I'm going to just do the job myself :banghead:

Anyway, what do people do for grounding rods here? Also, where can I get some decent outlets that wont break after 2 months? Is PP Electrical Supply decent, or will I have to special order anything in advance?

Any help on the subject greatly appreciated, trying to work on a tight deadline.

You're going to need a copper plated steel rod - so sadly you won't be getting that here in a hurry. Probably worth buying a genuine rod from overseas for this one. Also, can recommend an actual trained electrician who DOES understand three-prong plugs and grounding if you want someone else to do a good job.

PP Electric should have just about everything you need.

Not sure about grounding, except that here in PP my laptop doesn't give me a shock, but in Bangkok I always get a shock if I touch a usb port.

I have had good results from http://teams-cambodia.com/ . with electrical. I think their top man is Australian , knew exactly what was needed, and handed that info on to the men that did the job. Also a very reasonable priced job . :thumb:

You can buy the earth rods and clips from any good electrical store. Get your self a roll of 2.5 millimeter green and yellow single wire. You can also buy brass connection blocks, they are not really proper earth blocks, well the ones I've seen, but they do the job. UK regs say 16mm for cross bonding now, but that is over the top. Get some of that to go from the rod to the block . The boards I've seen don't have any where for earth connections inside, so you take your eaths to the block.

The main thing to buy is a good quality RCD, earthing is extra saftey or just getting rid of those little buzzes.

Use the inet for rod location etc.
Hope this helps.

Honest question - are those actually earth rods, or lightning rods?

Honest answer, I'm not sure. But they look and feel like the ones in the Uk. Chinese I should think. If it can take alightning strike, it should be ok for an earth leak. The RCD will trip out in milliseconds anyway if it's all been wired properly.
You can probably get the whole lot for under $50. The RCDs are around $22 iirc.

Our electrician will only install the more expensive Thai RCDs and not the cheaper Chinese RCDs - does that sound right?

I'm pretty sure that the ones TEAMS installed for me were Schneider brand, made in Germany so they must be available in Cambodia. I would put my money on that brand rather than anything made in Thailand or China.
