Nice tall and lean looking engine, almost sexy... Also now that I know how you look like I will say hello and present myself unless you wish otherwise if I ever run into you :hattip:

On the last picture it is a peculiar lonely looking mountain in the background, is it a volcano ?

Yes, say hello. That's Mt. Rainier looking from the harbor in Tacoma, Washington. Its 14,410ft and yes a volcano. (inactive but sometimes steams.) Mt. St. Helens that blew up in the '80s is just south of Mt. Rainier. I grew up in a town at the base of Mt. Rainer. I used to hike, hunt, fish and ski all around the base of Mt. Rainier.

Yes, you got to have clean engine room and engines. You take care of your equipment and it will take care of you. When peoples lives depend on it, you are very careful. No, not Detroit's, they are 6cyl Wartsila's. Smallest main drive engines I worked on, but sweet running engines. Our electric generators on that ferry were 6 cyl Cummins, also sweet engines. My specialty was Electra-Motive-Diesels EMD, V-12cyl, 16cyl, 20cyl, turbo charged 645 and 710. The 645 and 710 refers to the cubic inches of each cylinder. Multiply 645 or 710 times 12, or 16, or 20 for total cubic Inches. They were from 2500hp to 6000hp and some ships had 4 of them. Lots of noise and moving parts.

Another couple pictures of Mt. Rainier. Second one is of the US Air-Force Thunderbirds flying team, and the last one is of a Boeing/US Air-force C-17

Engine room cleaner than many restaurant kitchens. I bet Sailorman would also run a very efficient restaurant.

Thank You. Yes, I did before I got tired of the everyday grind and decided to become a Marine Engineer. Machinery doesn't bitch about the food or piss/moan about the service. After retirement I miss being on the water and the power you feel standing by a big 6000hp engine and starting it/bringing it to life. Kind of scary when you figure you are standing by a big machine that could grind you up, spit you out and not miss a beat. I once had a new guy who had a rag in his back pocket. He backed up near a big flywheel on running 16 cyl diesel. The flywheel grabbed the rag out of his back pocket. He quit that very day. (If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen, and he did.)

Yea, I think it would be just like standing next to Jamie.

Going through my files I found a couple more pictures of the sweet little Warsila diesels I worked on. The last one is when we were rebuilding it and opened up to show the valve gear removed and injector pumps.

Pictures of another ship I worked. 400ft, powered by four v-16/71 EMD's (Electra-Motive-Diesel) (6000hp each) (each were 16 cyl, with 710 cubic-inches per cylinder or 11360 cubic inchs or 186,157cc's. Double end, double car deck. propellers at each end. Cars roll on/Roll off. Lots to keep me busy.

This picture is of a passenger only ferry the company sold to Africa. It was too small for me to work, plus it was top heavy and I didn't even like riding it. The African company/country overloaded it with people. took it out in rough seas and it rolled over/sank killing a bunch of people.
