Deportation
Deportation
I see a bunch of people being arrested/deported for no visa or overstaying their visa, but I see no explanation as to what is done with them.
How long are they kept in jail and what jail? Do they have to pay a fine? What's the fine for overstay/no visa, is it by the day/month/year, and is there a limit? Where are they deported too and who pays for that? What if the people have no money to pay the fine/bribe? Do the embassies of their home country foot the bill or even get involved?

Re: Deportation
It depends. Yes. $5 a day for first 30, $6 a day after that. Yes, by the day - no, no limit. Deported to country of origin, they are supposed to pay - suspect that a lot of them just get a friendly shove over the Thai border... Then it doesn't get paid. No, and yes, to the extent that they will provide access (if they can pay) to a brief and try and monitor their condition in detention nothing more from most nations, some nations do break this rule but not very many.

They are held in Pochentong Immigration Detention Center until they pony up the cash and/or deported.Sailorman wrote:How long are they kept in jail and what jail?
There was a British expat arrested in Sihanoukville earlier this year, who was posting updates and pictures on FB of his time in the detention centre awaiting deportation. Was a thread about it here, or on 440, complete with pictures.
Re: Deportation
So they just keep you in the jail until some relative pays for your airfare home, or is it airfare and fine? I can see a good scam in this for the immigration police. That's why I call it Scambodia.

How is it a scam? It's up to you to keep your visa up to date.Sailorman wrote:So they just keep you in the jail until some relative pays for your airfare home, or is it airfare and fine? I can see a good scam in this for the immigration police. That's why I call it Scambodia.

Re: Deportation
It may be up to you, but get real, this is corrupt Cambodia. Any civilized country in the world you get thrown in jail you don't have to pay $10. for a chicken leg to eat, $5. for a visitor, or a new copy machine for the head jailers office to get moved to a jail cell with only 10 people in it. (This happened in Sihanoukville.) If you don't believe they won't try and scam you at the immigration lockup, I've got a bridge in Sihanoukville I would like to sell you
Re: Deportation
Valid points, but the part about being held in detention and paying the published fines and costs of deportation are not a scam.

Re: Deportation
Easy solution to avoid "Scambodia": keep your house in order. I cannot believe when I read about someone having overstayed 6 (six!!!!) years and do not have much sympathy, to be honest.Sailorman wrote:It may be up to you, but get real, this is corrupt Cambodia.
