Crash and Burn?

Post by Echon »

Hello All,
I'll be coming to Cambodia within the next 3 weeks, and I have about $1000 to my name. I'm currently working on my TEFL, but I do have tutoring experience and have worked abroad last year. I'm wondering what are my chances of finding work once I arrive. This is my main concern, because I only have $1000. This is my plan:
*Pay for 3 month visa on arrival= ~ $100 *
Find apartment that's decent =~ $150 + first month's deposit
*Food for a month =~ $100
*Bills $40

During the first month I'll be working online, which will give me about $250-450 per month. This is not always steady, but it will cover rent and food.
Because I do have experience, and right now enrolled in a TEFL program,in addition to finishing my degree in teaching, will I actually be hired? I don't have those things right as of this moment. So, I'm not sure about my chances.

I'm also not white. I'm not in a position to save more money. I have to be gone from here by June 1st.
I will have a good 12K coming in a couple of months, but that's in a couple of months. So, I'll only have to do this for about 2-3 months. What are my chances?

TL;DR Only $1000
No Tefl (half way completed)
No Degree (half way completed)
1 Year of Experience

The chances are pretty high that someone will take an interest in the 12k you have coming in a couple of months...

Some schools hire non-white teachers (though usually on a lower paid basis) in Cambodia. You're going to have to work harder to find a job and you won't get as many choices but the work is there... your biggest problem is that you will basically have to do unqualified English teaching until you have a degree... once you have the degree the international schools (which pay better) may well be interested and are less likely to discriminate against your skin tone.

Other than that... I'd advise you not to get sick until you have a job because medical care is out of your budget range and so is health insurance.

Suicide mission.

1. No degree
2. No TEFL
3. Many employers are racist
4. Not enough dosh in case you don't find something chop-chop
5. No transport of your own, expensive to get to work and back
6. The market is too crowded already

My advice, finish your TEFL, go to China, get some entry-level experience.

Oh, and I think you forgot work permit costs.

You could have done this 10 years ago, now it would be very risky/borderline foolish.

Hmmm. I usually suggest people just go for, and risk it all!

However, you seem like you might really struggle with your plan.

First off, make sure you put that you're in the middle of a degree and TEFL cert program on your CV.

And what is "not white"? Black? Asian? What?

Are you male or female? (That can make a huge difference for you.)

Also, do you have support back home if it's been 2 months and you haven't landed a job yet?

But overall your plan sounds like one I wouldn't advice implementing. If you can afford for it all to go pear shaped in the meantime while you wait for your 12 large, then definitely go for it.

ey dude if i were you just transfer to thailand. which is more easy to find a job. bcoz here most of the school or Company they will require you a certificate plus. its really true that the salary here is really low. less than 150$ if your a starter. in additional you have to wait for weeks or months before they willl accept you.

sorry just want to advice you ahead of time,
