Re: Cost of living
@JL: Do you realise that you could be responsible for a wave of enraged barangs attacking their landladies because their monthly bill is way over $2.50 ?Jamie_Lambo wrote:just paid my rent today for this month
Rent = $130
Elec + Water = $2.50
Total = $132.50
To all you people who are reading this and think you are being scammed because JL gets it supercheap , this is NOT a normal price for a month's electricity bill, so expect to pay much more. This is a special "Jamie price" I think. (Don't ask, don't tell. We don't want to know how you do this. Actually, yes we do. Apart from leaving the lights off that is...)

Now that's impressive budget.epidemiks wrote:Wifi is everywhere coffee is sold. The coffee is far more expensive than the 3g/4g service.
Absolute minimums, unless you're some kind of ascetic who likes being uncomfortable and bored:
Monthlies:
Rent 100
Utilities 30
3g/4g 5
Weeklies:
Household /groceries 50
Entertainment 50
Dailies:
Bicycle parking 500r x number of times you park somewhere
Breakfast 6,000r
Lunch 10,000r
Dinner 10,000r
Could eat cheaper, but if you want any kind of variety, be prepared to pay more/travel further
To know any other costs, kinda need to know what you're going to 'do' here.

Re: Cost of Living in Phnom Penh
if u can live that cheap in Cambodia , think how much cheaper u could live in Thailand
Electric - cheaper
drinking and in house Water- cheaper, ( i have never paid for water in 30 years here)
cooking gas- cheaper
food- cheaper ( an better)
Gasoline for motorcycle-cheaper
Bicycle parking - cheaper ( free)
most items u buy-cheaper
its only on rent u save, ( minimum decent room here in phuket will run you $150) but a $100 room is NOT somewhere i would want to spend my time
of course drinking-getting drunk, is cheaper
Jamie; i cant believe u only spend this
a frig will cost more than that

Silence, exile, and cunning.
Re: Cost of Living in Phnom Penh
I don't know about that. I can get good imported French Pâté, foie gras and cheese in Phnom Penh for a reasonable price and also US prime and Wagu steak. I dont know how available or expensive these are in Bangkok, but used to be nigh impossible to get. Also I can get very good French wines here at very competitive prices which are or certainly used to be prohibitive in Bangkok. The convenience is also important, I can get to the local deli on Monivong in about 10-15 minutes from my apartment to pick up what I need and get good smoked bacon and Cumberland sausage delivered to my door at $9/kg.phuketrichard wrote:if u can live that cheap in Cambodia , think how much cheaper u could live in Thailand

Phnom Penh also has a lot of good international restaurants which are fairly accessible and well priced. If one doesn't suit another is only about five minutes away. This was not the case in Bankok, might have changed but I don't think the price will be as competitive as here!
Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: Cost of living
Its ~600/m, hardly impossible. A regular family here would be doing ok on that much.General Mackevili wrote:Now that's impressive budget.epidemiks wrote:Wifi is everywhere coffee is sold. The coffee is far more expensive than the 3g/4g service.

The basics of living wouldn't be more if you're here to live as cheaply as possible, had no family and ate local. could probably go much lower by cutting the 50/w entertainment expenses and didn't spend the whole 10k riel a night on dinner.
Fun? Not really.

was NOT referring to expensive or even western restaurants, as i doubt the op was, not at 10,000 riel/mealKuroneko wrote:I don't know about that. yes u can eat western food cheaper in PP, BUT u cant eat local food cheaper ( and for sure i prefer my cow meung gai with NO BONES for less$)
and i said nothing about wine which is expensive here
At villa market , foodland, even Tesco u can get all kinds of expensive imported foods but again the op was not referring to eating cheese, foie gras, pate' or wagu steak LOL
