(Competent) Clinic/Doctors List
Re: (Competent) Clinic/Doctors List
One addition on Khema:
While all the the docs I've experienced there (3) seemed to know what they were doing, their pharmacy is a rip off, even after the 20% discount occasionally given. They charge 200-500% of what you pay elsewhere for branded medication. So get your medicine elsewhere if possible.

Re: (Competent) Clinic/Doctors List
That thread wasn't long, was it? I'll add some general thoughts if I may. Apologies in advance if any info is out of date.
Actually I have come across good medics in Embassy, Raffles, Wat Phnom clinics and in Calmette and Royal hospitals but it is luck of the draw. Dr Chhun Lay (who I first met in PP Heart Center adjacent to Calmette) has a good heart clinic on 118 near Psar Thmey. Embassy clinic (cheaper than Raffles) has some good specialists but you need to book in advance as they don't attend daily. Possibly the best method is to do your own GP work online, mostly you get all you need online and can self-treat. NHS Direct (in the UK) is a good site because they don't promote unnecessary meds. If you need one, you can self-select a specialism, then search around for the best person/clinic in that field. If you really want a GP, Dr Scott is (expensive but) OK, but don't expect the same up-to-date expertise you would get from a GP in the West. I would not ask a pharmacy for advice, just use them as a place to buy meds that you have decided to buy, or been prescribed by a clinic (as said, don't buy from the clinic's own pharmacy). A good pharmacy (for choice and for price) is the one on the NW corner of St 136/Pasteur. My ex had her baby in Calmette and the service was good from the first ante-natal through to delivery but it helped to give a $100 tip to the delivery team, who were all nurses btw. I don't think we ever saw a doctor over the whole 9 months and that was no problem.
Pasteur Clinic (adjacent to Calmette) is good for immunisations and they do HIV tests for free (if you don't need the result in writing).
For cold surgery, one is best off going to Bangkok, Saigon or the West.
Take care of small wounds, they can get bad in the tropics, rub garlic on them. Stings like hell but does good. Oh, and if you are conscious and able to talk, don't let anyone put you on a drip.
If one has a trauma or some acute condition that needs immediate attention, it has to be Calmette or some major hopspital with proper emergency facilities, maybe Khmer-Soviet is an alternative? Then trust to luck.

Re: (Competent) Clinic/Doctors List
Dumb question but referring to earlier post above, why not let them put you on a drip?
Despite what angsta states, it’s clear from reading through his posts that angsta supports the free FreePalestine movement.

Re: (Competent) Clinic/Doctors List
(I'll admit to being a bit cynical and blasé with this)
From recent experience, most of the drips seem to be prescribed by folks who in fact are not actual GPs/medical doctors. There is a sort of black-magic general public assumption that a drip is a cure-all to most ailments. One description for a saline drip the i was given is that the serum is good. Not much of a medical or even layman's explanation.
As far as I'm concerned, if you are not prescribed an IV, saline or otherwise, by the doctor and administered by a real nurse/professional, then it is poor practice to have a suspect contradictory diagnosis badly applied. My other half's daughter was given a drip recently- it fell out part way through the bottle contents. On inspection, the needle was actually fucked, with a 30degree bend halfway along it's length, and some fool advocated shoving it back in the poor kids hand.

On the subject of good clinics in Phnom Penh
I'd advocate for both the following based on very recent experience

Re: (Competent) Clinic/Doctors List
My medical friends tell me that drips are massively overused in Cambodia. In certain cases they are the best method to get fluids and drugs into the body but in the majority of cases that they are used here, the western doctor would say drink water and swallow a pill, if even that.
Drips can be dangerous if applied incorrectly. Western doctors for example would be horrified to see a patient riding pillion on a moto with one inserted. Neither are they easy to put in (especially if the patient is overweight) so injuries and infections can be caused.

I confirm the recommendation. Plus:
- Quick access (within hours)
- Knowledgeable
- Open to questions, helpful
- Allows you to buy medication outside if you want to, will happily just give prescription free of charge
- Will check results from tests you bring by yourself
But.....
- Limited English, quite some conversation has to go through his (also Ukrainian) female nurse. If you like to discuss your uro-stuff with guys only you might not like that setting too much.....
- Price a bit steep for some maybe? I was told a consultation costs 65 USD but somehow it ended up being 50 USD. With echo and (1) lab test and some meds I ended up close to 100 USD. Follow up appointment was free of charge though, not sure if that's common practice or because I looked like a beggar.
Re: (Competent) Clinic/Doctors List
This is welcomed thread.
Here are my experiences
Khema International Polyclinic: Its very hit and miss. I have had to go to there a number of times, both for myself and with others. Most recently i was there this month and it was a total disaster. Got completely misdiagnosed, and the suggested treatment they put me on only made matters worse. Luckily, I was visiting Singapore the following weekend and got to visit a competent doctor who correctly diagnosed me and gave me the appropriate medication.
Its when they get simple things like this wrong that makes me hesitant about recommending Khema
Dr Scott: Good doctor, knowledgeable
Sunrise: Excellent facilities, I get my health check ups here. Very fast and professional, also great value.
Naga Clinic: Avoid if possible. Not the most hygienic
European Dental Clinic: Great dentist, highly skilled and very friendly
