well, I think the probability of theft is a big factor for me. No matter HOW careful you are at some point someone is gonna nick it. Or you'll find yourself not going places if uncertain about having a secure lockup. For this reason the cheap jap bike it best. I used a 5 speed one for a while and THAT was great.

Another thing is that the basket IS really handy and would look really dorky on a MTN bike :P

Ok a real cheap charlie compromise has been reached, bought a cheap crappy second-hand bottom of the range Giant Warp more of a pseudo MTB than the real deal despite having front and rear suspension. It seems to ride a bit better than my Jap commuter rental and boy was cycling back through traffic dragging it alongside me fun  But what the hell if it gets nicked or totalled it's no big deal.

What's the deal with the Giant shop on Tchecoslovaquie dropped it off for a quick service/lube/adjust seat and handlebars and the price is whatever you want to pay?

Giant is a great company out of Canada (BC, I believe).

I rode cross country style for years and always rode a GT. Probably because it was the first (bmx) bike my dad bought for me.
I'll give ya 500 Riel for it...
