Cockroaches in the Kitchen, what to do ?

My friend has cockroaches in the kitchen of his restaurant. Any ideas about how to get rid of them, apart from taking everything out of the kitchen and fumigating with insecticide ? And even in that case, won't the surviving cockroaches just move on to the rest of the house ? so making the problem even worse ?

other than that
empty the kitchen, fumigate, for a few days, wash everything an i mean everything, place everything back ,
dont let dishes pile up, dont let garbage pile up outside, seal up all entry points when no one is there, dust with boric acid powder, set out cockroach bait , clean the kitchen and all utensils every day, an i mean CLEAN

Had this problem before in a restaurant kitchen and this is what we ended up doing, took a few months to completely get rid of them..

About 12 months or more ago, I had a problem with ants. I bought some borax and set about to get rid of them. ask-the-expats-questions-answers/borax- ... ml#p259751

This year, I haven't seen an ant since I don't know when.

And just to add: It's not a matter of the 'surviving cockroaches', the problem is the eggs. Means you need to follow up for awhile.

Thanks all. They didn't want to shut the restaurant, so I was looking for an alternative. Thanks UT. I'll suggest the borax solution and see how they get on.

It depends a lot on the location. If the kitchen adjoins some back alley and there are any loose-fitting covers or grills over drains or a lot of commerce and garbage nearby it can be difficult to control. So all entrances need fly screens and any dodgy gaps need to be filled. As above, they need to be poisoned, while you go around and check every nook and cranny in the kitchen and bleach the fuck out of it. Fill in any cracks. Check all the drains in the building and put suitable screens on them. From then on the kitchen will have to be kept meticulously clean, and all food waste put in a closed bin.

This is a great chart. In London we had German Cockroaches, they were small but still gruesome. As far as I've seen it's mostly those huge American Cockroaches over here, with a few Orientals.

They look like German cockroaches to me. (Thanks for the chart JB.) They are small, but the sheer numbers are scary. I don't even know if they are a health hazard, and the food is all kept in containers, but if nothing is done they are going to be running the kitchen. And the first guest that goes out the back to the kitchen may well be the last.

Tbh, the little critters stay hidden when things are busy, but if you go into the kitchen when it's closed and then turn the light on, it's like a horror movie scene. Good info about filling in holes and cracks in the walls, thanks. The building isn't even that old, but it's done Khmer-style, so lots of holes in the walls where the pipes come in, or where it wasn't sealed properly. Friend has taken the place over recently, so is still discovering all the wonders that the owner didn't mention (and of course, why would you ? )

Yes, they scatter with light. I remember staying in SNV at a cheaper GH, and I was taking a bath when the power would go out. These things emerged from almost everywhere almost immediately. The wall tiles had spaces behind them where they inhabited, and they would come up and I was never so freaked out. My Gf had to come in and put the light on her phone to save me. haha.

They also bite you while you sleep and suck on your blood.
