It depends on you as to what's extravagant vs. reasonable. My rent is about $1,000 a month for a 1 bed apartment and to many expats in Cambodia that's beyond extravagant - it's more than they earn in a month. To me it's reasonable because it's a fairly small percentage of my take each month.

Only you can decide what's reasonable. To me a $60 room isn't reasonable - it's abject poverty. To others here, it's home.

Good advice as you can just book for month, have everything you need, cooking facilities, fridge washer, right down to knives forks and spoons. http://www.luxriversidehotels.com/apartment-special I lived there before moving out to Chroy Changvar three years ago. Meekong Gardens are much better value and include a very nice outside pool and BBQ area. Lowest priced appts start at around $450 (ish) they are also fully serviced and equipped. Nice tranquil location but may be a bit inconvenient without your own transport. (takes me 10 minutes to get to riverside on my bike)
Here's their brochure http://www.mekong-gardens.com/images/fi ... ochure.pdf

Season Residence has nice enough apartments that they will rent by the month, starting around $800 a month I think. Well located n Street 144, but maybe no balconies (or balcony so small you can't really sit on it).

Central Mansions is very nice, they also rent by the month, $1000-$1500+ per month I think.

There are a few places on St. 278 in BKK, the "Golden street," I think they rent in the $500/month range and do short term rentals, but I'm not sure.

I agree with the others that it may be hard to arrange a two month lease in advance, you might want to jot down a few ideas and then show up, stay in a guesthouse for a few nights, and walk around to the places/areas that interest you and look for an apartment available for two months. Cash on the spot may be more appealing than emailing places and asking you to "hold" an apartment for two months, when they don't know if you'll show up, or if someone else will come along in the meantime and want the place for a year.

AFAIK you will pay more in PP than elsewhere. Sihanoukville is changing fast. There used to be very few short-term places but there are quite a few now. It also used to be possible to find places at $100 a month, but the demand has increased so these places are always full. But, you should be able to get somewhere decent for $250-400.
As for Koh Kong, no idea if they have appartments, you would probably have to stay in a guesthouse. But it is possible to rent a place in Kampot.

Short-term rental and holiday appartments are a relatively new concept in Cambodia, so most places that you see advertised are for longterm standard rental. And I definitely wouldn't trust anything that you see online anyway.

yeah echoing what some others have said,
best bet is to stay in a guesthouse for a few days and go scope a few places out in the area you want, from experience everything seems to be priced far too high online to what you get just turning up, sihanoukville seems to be a lot cheaper for accommodation than PP you can get nice 1 bedroom apartments up victory hill for $70, i was paying $110, was western toilet, kitchen area, cable tv, big fridge freezer, big king sized bed, air con + floor fans, the more up market places you looking at $2-500, pay anything more than that and your just wasting your money, near enough all the apartments in sihanoukville offer month to month contracts with 1 month bond, i know one place its $125 p/m all bills+wifi included + on site laundry facilities, new building.

Grinch youre paying $1000 a month for a 1 bed room apartment? thats crazy money :P

it all depends on your standards of living and reasons for renting, i rent apartments in sihanoukville because it works out over half the price of staying in a cheap $10 a night guesthouse, and i get a better room with a kitchen, for the sake of a month or 2 and if your spending anything more than $4-500 a month its sometimes just easier finding a nice guesthouse, some guesthouses might sort you out a cheaper monthly deal, i mean i booked into a guesthouse for 4 days in PP when i was training and extending my visa, i ended up staying for 9 days, , it was during that heatwave begining of May so i decided to add the aircon to my room (i prefer the draft of a fan to the chill of aircon, but it was just too hot) they ended up giving me the aircon for free for the rest of my stay, this was only a cheap $10 a night place as well

Thanks everyone for all your input after some consideration I think the most I want to spend on rent is $350 judging from what you guys say it would appear I'll have an easier time renting in Sihanoukville rather than Phnom Penh.

thats a very sensible budget :good: you can pretty much rent any 1 bed apartment with that money in sihanoukville, the avereage price for a lot of the nicer places are between 2-300$, theres lots of places about just go for a walk around or rent a moto and drive around, go down all the side streets off the beach side of the main road
