Do Cambodians take a long time to eat a meal?

Post by TeachingForPeanuts »

I spend 10 minutes preparing a meal and 10 minutes eating it.

My girlfriend spends 20 minutes preparing a meal for herself and like an hour eating it. Is this normal? Are they just slow eaters, even when eating alone? Why does it take them so long?

FUCK yea.
my gf is eating 30 minutes to 1 hour after i have finished....

Eating is the most sociable time for most SE asians.
a little food, lot of of nibbling, a lot of talk :-)

So you've seen 1 person eating slowly and now assume that it is a countywide trait.

Cambodians are just like any other people, some eat quick, some eat slow, some are nice, some are not... Why does everyone always feel the need to lump all in to sweeping statements.

It's not how long they take to eat that's annoying, it is HOW they eat (generally) that winds me up. *slip slap slip slap slurp*

I haven’t noticed this and I tend to eat too fast as well.

Asians are nosier eaters though and whilst in the army I remember a young Chinese boy getting regularly beaten up by his fellow recruits or having his food hurled across the room by a sergeant for his noisy mastications, lip smacking and eating with his mouth open. He learnt his lesson surprisingly slowly as well so it showed how ingrained it was in him.

Cambodia is not mentioned! Personally I am in the French camp. :D The time I spend on dinner is linked to the time it takes to finish a bottle of Bordeaux, maybe 90minutes.

A global ranking of each country based on how long they spend eating and drinking reveals the French are top of the league whilst Americans are bottom.

Apparently, the French spend a leisurely two hours, 13 minutes a day drinking and eating, which is far above the average of one hour 30 minutes and represents the most time spent on meals compared to any other country included in the survey (see table below).

Meanwhile in the land of coffee on the go, Americans spend the least time eating and drinking at just one hour on mealtimes.

@TeachingForPeanuts have you ever eaten a meal with French, Italians, Greeks, Middle Easterners? Their meal times last a couple of hours. As with Cambodians, meal time is also often a time to socialise, it is to be enjoyed and not rushed.

I totally agree. I think the mass media plants this shit in peoples heads. Heck if you believed your TV, all Americans carry guns and 30 percent of them are mass shooters. That's impossible!

I haven't had that experience OP with Mrs Cargo when we eat a meal she's cooked or even at a restaurant just the 2 of us.

BUT...

when she has a dinner party and invites friends over, it's quite funny (in my mind at least)..

They bring out the food, I sorta get stuck into it and I'm done. By this time, I'm sorta thinking geez Mrs Cargo has cooked too much food as our khmer friends seem to have stopped too..

BUT...

maybe 15+ mins they get a second wind and start again and continue nibbling for a couple of hours...in between lots of conversation of course..

And, to my surprise most of the food is gone :hattip:
