Cambodia for 6 - 12 months?

Post by Lex »

If you could chill in Cambodia for 6 - 12 months on around $1500 a month how would you do it?

I was in PP for 2 weeks and I loved it, was a little put off by the street crime though (often have a camera with me).
I am in my 30s and do like ladies of the night and herbal supplements.

PP seems like the obvious choice but I would need a decent place. Didn't really go outside of 136/GSM areas so I'm not familiar with the rest.

On that budget? I wouldn't be chilling, I'd be working to raise my living standard to acceptable.

You're saying $1,500 USD a month is not a acceptable living standard in Cambodia? I do great in Bangkok on around the same - although the entertainment is a bit more here.

I'm open to working and making some extra money but let's say that doesn't happen. My ideal budget would be around $1,500 - $1,600. It wouldn't be the end of the world if I go over but that's my target.

A single guy can live ok for that much in the capital. Breaking it down though, it might not seem that much. Say you want an upmarket apartment, and that's $800 a month. Then figure in another $150 on electricity and water etc, and service charges for the apartment. So you have $650 left. At least $100 will be used up in tuk-tuk fees before you even hit the supermarket and throw $100 on a load of groceries.

So we have $450 left. You are eating Oreo's and Spam till the next paycheck.

Thanks for the reply.

My total expenses in Bangkok are $1100 - $1200 without dates or entertainment.

So which parts of Cambodia are more expensive than living in the Thonglor neighborhood in Bangkok? I spend $30 on electricity, $9 on water, $60 on internet here. I eat ok but I manage to keep it pretty basic and cheap.

And I found the Cambo phone plans to be very cheap.

I understand accommodation may be a bit more expensive but couldn't I find a small one bedroom/studio for $600 - $700 in a decent area?

I could get wild and just stay a little less time. Let's say $1800 a month. I've got money in the bank I just want it to last.

Well, obviously every single person will think differently about the amount, so take it all in as just helpful info on both sides of the scale.

Personally, I think that's a damn good amount to have fun with in Cambodia just "chilling."

If you end up spending $300 a month for accommodation, that still leaves about $40 every day for food, drinks, company, extra Tinder Super Likes, maybe even some soap.

Can't go clubbing every single night, but you're bound to have a few days a week doing fuck all and just spending a few bucks on nothing more than a few meals and night caps.

You can eat out all the time, drink like a fish and definitely pay for a bit of play on $40 a day spending cash.

I've made as low as $1200 a month in Phnom Penh and can't recall a boring month. Never saved much, but was always enough to go out all the time, and I can't cook so much as an egg and don't even like wasting time having to peel oranges, so have eaten out every day of my life since forever.

Not sure if you've been elsewhere in Cambodia, but I'd think about heading to Sihanoukville. I love the place (some love it, some don't). I always end up spending less there, and I think it's mainly because there's no big dance club that draws me in there. With drinks being about a dollar everywhere, it's near impossible to blow too much on drinks.

Even think about heading to the islands off the coast of Sihanoukville or Kep.

While you're there, check out Kampot.

I love Siem Reap a lot too. I'm even guilty of partying on Pub Street and enjoying myself.

If you got that kind of time, I'd check out a bunch of places at the beginning and then after you've seen a few in a short time, go back to the ones you liked the most.

And whatever you do, wear a helmet (both literally and figuratively).

Ok nice, thanks for the info.

Sounds like Sihanoukville or PP are the main contenders however, I won't be coming in until around July or August so I'm wondering what the scene in Snooky will be then.

OP you have a high budget as 50 USD a day is more than enough,
(Some folk on here become money snobs and look down on expats who live cheap ).
I'll break down a budget for you.
Cheap room in snooky is about 5 USD per day.
Cheap hooker ST @ chicken farm 5 USD.
10 beer @ cheaper joints in victory hill is 5 USD
Spacecakes are 2USD a cake.
Beers in hostess bars average 1 to 1.25 USD so if you've 5 of them plus a tip ,pool table it's around 10 USD.
Lots of cheap BBQs for under 5 USD and a French baggette with patte should get you through the day for 1 USD.
5 USD on motobike rentals and 2USD for fuel.
Then the remaining USD dollars could be spent on cigarettes , weed and other miscellaneous products.

What an incredibly ugly life that would be. Short-time bangs on a chicken farm? Lol. Nothing like people who really live life to its fullest in order to avoid well-paid work is there?

5 $ hookers and 50cent beers is better than 100$ ST and 10$ pints in the West.
