Well, it turns out Vietnam Air has a 4 pm flight to PP for about $145US, one-way, with extra baggage and all other charges added in. I'm going to skip the plan to stay one night in SGN, then get the Ibis bus at 0830 to the border and snooze to PP, as delightful as Vung Tau-SGN VIP minibus and intercity bus travel are.

I can take a leisurely late morning VIP bus out of Vung Tau (140,000 VND) to D1, taxi to airport and arrive in PP around 7 pm.
