A bit far away but at Bangkok weekend market (chatuchak) you will find amazing hammocks, XXL with wooden sticks that keep the thing open for more comfort

You could also just do it apartment style... show a picture to a tuktuk driver and have him take you to the places the Khmers go to get them. Odds are one of them will be where they're made, and you can get them to make a big one custom for you.

I bought one of those steel frame ($20) hammocks and they too sag in the middle. It not a matter of holding weight, its a matter of no sag and comfort. Do you want to lie down bent over and wrapped up in a cocoon, or stretch out with no sag? It looks like a business opportunity for some industrious person.

The only one I have used in Cambodia, since most are too small and thin, has been the camouflage style ones that some of the tuk-tuk guys sleep in at night. You can an get them at Russian Market. It isn't as airy as some of the woven ones, but fit well on the hammock steel frame and was comfortable.

+1 - Do not be tempted by the $5 hammocks sold around psar thmei and riverside. I bought one years back, presuming that it wouldn't last for more than a few months. Yeah right, 2 hours after I put it up I was on my arse (one of those video-gag moments where everyone laughs except you :o ) - and I don't weigh much.
The camouflage ones are stronger - they cost about $15 if I remember right.

I guess I should have noted in my OP that I am not fat, just tall. So the hammocks have never been my thing because I always had my feet or legs hanging off the end. I am about 6ft2inches tall or around 1.85 meters. So yeah, I would love the thick white rope style hammock with the pieces of wood at each end keeping the rope spread out for me.
I'll give ya 500 Riel for it...

I frequent a shop here in Snooky that makes shirts for me. (block and a half south of Kangaroo bar.) I downloaded/printed pictures of the hammock I wanted, went to the one store in town that has a big fabric selection, and bought heavy material. I then went to a hardware store and bought wood hoe handles (two) for a dollar each.

Back at the sewing shop we laid out the material and doubled it. With the pictures they got a good idea of what I wanted. After it was finished I drilled holes in the ends and middle of each round piece of wood ( make sure the shop leaves a hole in the middle), inserted the wood in the loops at each end of the hammock and then threaded line (rope for you landlubbers) from the ends and middle then tied the three on each end together. From this I ran heavy line (rope) to a tree and a piller of my gazebo.

Cost: $21 for fabric, $2. hoe handles, $12, to sew it into a hammock. Its 9 feet long and 4 feet wide. It doesn't sag in the middle like 99.99% of the hammocks in Cambo. I haven't seen another one like it in Snooky. The wood at the ends is the real secret as it keeps the fabric spread out. ( I also used an industrial size staple gun which is cheap at any hardware store, to staple the fabric to the wood.)
Sounds a bit much for me, although a great idea. I am only planning to be in country for another 12-15 months, hopefully, then back to the US, so I just need a decent one to last me until then. I am sure I can spend $100 and get a great one back home without having to do design or fabrication work myself. :)

Thanks for the idea. Oh, for the record, I live in Phnom Penh, not SHV or Siem Reap.

Cheers.

Super-Hammock, well worth the time, money and thought it took to put together. Even strong enough to hold my lard-butt.

Great picture. Yes, something like in your picture would work great for me, if I could find the space on my back balcony. I think I could make it work. :)

Where would I go about getting one like in your picture? Not looking to spend top dollar, just something nice that won't break and is long enough. Not picky.

Where did you get yours and how much?
