Bacteria working on the stuff must be the cause of the ammonia in urine. Fresh urine doesn't smell, but a bum's pants sure do !

You can get Potassium Nitrate from urine as well which is really handy in making gunpowder.

i was going to say this thread confused me, because my mum uses bleach when cleaning the toilet, but as you said it must be "stale" piss that causes it....

Yeah, and I've pissed in chlorine swimming pools a lot. Nothing happens (besides getting a noticeable decline in "pool party" invitations in recent years).

Random fact: No matter what crazy stories your friends have told you, specially treated pool water that turns blue/green when you pee in it does NOT exist.
