Are you vaccinated ? And what for?

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

- While the rich and famous are after dubious stem cells that cost tens of thousands per treatment, many are conveniently forgetting the dozen of common vaccines that are more than one thousand times cheaper and proven to save and prolong the lives of hundreds of millions of people. This is indeed an awesome irony of mankind that I find hard to understand. Indeed, many are NOT so wise when it comes to the knowledge and life-saving decision to vaccinate themselves with the awesome modern technology that effectively shields them from many severe and fatal diseases.

Today we are lucky to have effective vaccines for many categories of people: Children, travellers, students enrolling abroad, parents, parents-to-be, child-minders, people of advancing age, people with chronic diseases and people of various lifestyles.

I invite you to go through the following checklists of the more essential vaccines currently available and see if there is any that you may have missed out: Influenza (the only yearly jab), tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, chickenpox, human papillomavirus, pneumococcal conjugate, meningococcal meningitis, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, haemophilus influenzae type B, typhoid and rabies.

We should know that we can catch VPDs from sex, travelling, certain outdoor activities, food and drinks and even working with animals. Bear in mind that adults are more likely to die from VPDs than children. Ageing increases our risk of infection along with more severe symptoms and complications.

I'm not sure how long the vaccinations last, nearly every time I used to travel outside Europe I'd get some. Since moving here I haven't had too many. Typhoid is a very serious illness. KIR got it one time and went from being a fairly healthy and solid looking guy to a walking corpse in just a few days, and never recovered. I believe his death a year or two later was directly attributable to that episode.

I think it was a longer period than that. The time he had to take off from work due to the illness got him canned from New World. Which was a blessing in disguise because he then went on to a much better position with Raffles.
Alas.

I remember he credited Dr. Gavin Scott with pretty much saving his life, as he had been ill for a while and it was going misdiagnosed. Dr. Scott had him admitted to hospital straight away.

KiR had lost a bit of weight after his sickness and he said that when his regular tuk-tuk driver saw him, the first think he said was, "Ya got AIDS?" Lol.

I also remember him saying that he asked Dr. Scott how he might have acquired the Typhoid and he said Dr. Scott told him, "Cambodia is a dirty fucking place." or something eloquently to that effect.

This all reminds me that I should get some blood work done and get my vaccs updated. But I've been saying that for years.

I got shots for Tetanus/Diptheria/Polio/Whooping Cough (combo shot for those), Hep A, Cholera and Typhoid before I left Australia in 2014. Cost over $300 though, how much is it here?

Not expensive at Pasteur Clinic (to the left of Calmette). Not sure if they do all of those. I think you only need to refresh them every ten years so you should be OK for a while.

If they had a vaccine to stop people being stupid I think it would be very popular, but for obvious reasons I would never ever need one.

You need to get typhoid topped up every three years, it wears off pretty quick. Saw someone on FB got it here, think it was $15-20. A friend here cought it, said it was like hot knives to the guts. Had to carry her own spoon around for a few weeks. Hep A is every 20 years if you get the booster. Rabies jab apparently really hurts, I was given it as an option as well as JE just before I came back this time around, but they weren't particularly insistent. Also, surprisingly enough this time they didn't go mental when I said I wasn't bothered by malaria.
