Samouth, one word of advice. The IELTS is way harder than the TOEFL, and more expensive. Judging from your posts, I'd say you should aim for a high score in the TOEFL before attempting the IELTS.

And if you're not reading a lot of English every day, and listening to radio/watching TV a lot, you are wasting your time.

Yes I heard that too. People said TOEFL is slightly easier and cheaper. However, TOEFL is not widely and internationally recognized comparing with IELTS. TOEFL is likely recognized by USA and a few countries. Applying for scholarship to USA is really hard, so I want to expand my opportunity in getting scholarship as huge as I can. I don't mind getting scholarship from any countries as long as they are developed countries.

I taught IELTS in Europe for a year and a half before coming here, and naively thought I could do the same in Cambodia (I tried for over a year).

The problems stem from, not only he real lack of 'proper' English that Khmer students have (when compared with latin/germanic/slavic native speakers, which at least have comparable grammar/vocab to English in a loose way) but also the west-o-centric style of the topics involved.

A simple exercise on taking a train, for example would need so much explanation that the task in hand would become secondary. Then, the more complex topics, discussed daily in, let's say, Italian newspapers (climate change, tourism, economics etc etc) are not found or discussed in great abundance here, making comprehension nigh on impossible to all but the most die hard dedicated students (zero).

It's not a totally lost cause, but as another poster said, you've got to have 100% total immersion in western culture, along with a precise knowledge of the English language before getting a decent score.

Mostly, like most things here, it was about money (for the school) and image (for student), obtaining very little academic results.

Yes, KS is right. There are quite a few native speakers of English who would have problems doing the IELTS, and moreso if they weren't used to the topics for reading/listening etc.

You should do placement test first then you can decide. Next term start 2 April. In my oppinion i think you should study IELTs preparation Course (240$) GEP level 10 equivalent.

I'd try to get a scholarship to the USA and then try for England. Australia may pay you to go to University there but that's only because they understand how many cunts you'd be dealing with on a daily basis. Plus, to even be allowed into Australia you need to prove you have a massive collection of singlet style shirts, generic tribal tattoos on your arm, and a voice that doesn't distinguish between being indoors and outdoors.
