Are mini mart clerks regularly screwing me out of 100-200 riel in change?

Apologists defending the Khmer like to argue that we barang shouldn't get worked up over 100-200 riel. I disagree. But when you look at the totality of it, it's a huge deal. How many barang (and to a lesser extent Khmer) go into a particular shop every day? Every month? This becomes a very big deal.

My question is, whose pocket would I rather have my money, theirs or mine? After all, we are not cheating anyone. We pay the stated price, the price THEY stated they sell their merchandise for. But they routinely cheat us by intentionally not giving us the correct change back.

Sorry, but that is very much akin to theft. I don't respond kindly to thieves of any kind, phones, motos, purses, etc., regardless of nationality.

So you can understand my bewilderment when people tell me their salary is low, or blah, blah, blah.....

If you don't argue to have the CORRECT change returned to you, you are hurting all barang by enabling and fortifying Khmer beliefs that it's ok.

I had this same experience many times at Lucky supermarkets. I went to their head office and spoke to the person in charge there, who apologized and admitted the clerks and even the managers of the stores who vociferously defended their clerks were wrong! Now I have his personal number and he encouraged me to call him if and when I have an incident again. Of course I never do anymore, because the clerks and managers know me and know I don't bend over and grab my ankles.

Incidentally, when the guy from Lucky's corporate office and I were talking, I asked if the store chain would be conducting training in this area. He responded that they couldn't at that time, and told me for now just let him know if I have any more problems. I understood his comment to mean that Lucky Supermarkets still intends to cheat every other customer it can, unless they speak up for themselves. Gotta love the KOW.
In your haste to again blame Khmers for constantly cheating and persecuting you, you overlooked the fact that Lucky Supermarket is owned by a Chinese. 8)

Fact is, most of all staff in this country are Khmer, regardless of who owns the business.

Sucks when you're wrong and get exposed, doesn't it?

I guess we all have a bar for what upsets us. To me, 2.5 cents is not worth getting upset over. Hell, I am willing to let up to 10x that figure go without seeing red. Times the figure by 100 and I will give you a sarcastic comment. Times it by 1000 and I will let you know my inner asshole.

I can t imagine selling my peace of mind for 2.5 cents

Have you ever considered the value of your time? Do you find your inflexible principles detrimental to your happiness? I would ask about if this attitude affects your relationships, but you have answered that in another thread.

Your fixation on ankle grabbing is very telling my uptight repressed friend. Are you sure that the multitude of BB pellet sized Khmer women you have had relationships with were thrown out or in truth, did they leave your abusive sorry ass?

It is really easy to just avoid those shops. If enough people avoid them, they may change their policy.

Go to other shops where they do the right thing.

Do you honestly think they could connect the dots?

It is just so refreshing to see a bunch of miserly old, pinch faced, pursed lip, tight arses going to so much trouble to build up their 100 riel charity stack.

That's what we do with them, right? Give them to people who's lives will actually be improved by 2.5 cents.

Ah, so good to know that we are not all curmudgeonly, old, penny pinching, churlish cheap-skates loosing sleep over loosing two bits, after all.

And the ultimate evidence that we are not just money-grubbing, tight-arsed stiffs - well, shopping at the mini mart proves don't really care two hoots about getting stuff at the right price anyway. Yeah??

Here's one for us..

It is about making money. If enough people avoid them, they wont make enough money.
