the Kiwi mart across the street from Larrys always gives the right change
I went to the Kiwi Mart.
I selected two bottles of water. Total cost $1.10
I handed over one dollar and one thousand riel.
They owed me fifteen cents.
That's 600 riel.
They handed me 500 riel in change and this receipt.

Kiwi marts exchange rate is 4100 iirc and you paid in $ + Riel, you end up losing out on money when you do that, best of just paying in $ or paying in RielCam Nivag wrote: ↑Fri Feb 08, 2019 9:53 pmI tested this today.Jamie_Lambo wrote: ↑Tue Feb 05, 2019 2:35 am

Why doesn't the receipt show how much I paid in dollars and riel and how much was returned in change in dollars and riel? The clerk knew if he input all that, it would say 600 riel due back.

why you asking me, did you not watch him type in $1 + 1000riel into his Till computer screen, it converts everything and it then comes up with the exact change to be given, its nothing to do with the clerk its all in the automated computer systemCam Nivag wrote: ↑Fri Feb 08, 2019 10:21 pmJamie_Lambo wrote: ↑Fri Feb 08, 2019 10:09 pmKiwi marts exchange rate is 4100 iirc and you paid in $ + Riel, you end up losing out on money when you do that, best of just paying in $ or paying in RielCam Nivag wrote: ↑Fri Feb 08, 2019 9:53 pmI tested this today.Jamie_Lambo wrote: ↑Tue Feb 05, 2019 2:35 am

The receipt says I paid the exact amount and no change was given at all. 'Tis a lie.Jamie_Lambo wrote: ↑Fri Feb 08, 2019 10:41 pm

Yes people, figure it out already. The clerks rip you off . So do most any other Khmer if given a sliver of opportunity.
Apologists defending the Khmer like to argue that we barang shouldn't get worked up over 100-200 riel. I disagree. But when you look at the totality of it, it's a huge deal. How many barang (and to a lesser extent Khmer) go into a particular shop every day? Every month? This becomes a very big deal.
My question is, whose pocket would I rather have my money, theirs or mine? After all, we are not cheating anyone. We pay the stated price, the price THEY stated they sell their merchandise for. But they routinely cheat us by intentionally not giving us the correct change back.
Sorry, but that is very much akin to theft. I don't respond kindly to thieves of any kind, phones, motos, purses, etc., regardless of nationality.
So you can understand my bewilderment when people tell me their salary is low, or blah, blah, blah.....
If you don't argue to have the CORRECT change returned to you, you are hurting all barang by enabling and fortifying Khmer beliefs that it's ok.
I had this same experience many times at Lucky supermarkets. I went to their head office and spoke to the person in charge there, who apologized and admitted the clerks and even the managers of the stores who vociferously defended their clerks were wrong! Now I have his personal number and he encouraged me to call him if and when I have an incident again. Of course I never do anymore, because the clerks and managers know me and know I don't bend over and grab my ankles.
Incidentally, when the guy from Lucky's corporate office and I were talking, I asked if the store chain would be conducting training in this area. He responded that they couldn't at that time, and told me for now just let him know if I have any more problems. I understood his comment to mean that Lucky Supermarkets still intends to cheat every other customer it can, unless they speak up for themselves. Gotta love the KOW.
