Applying for stimulus check

Post by camboyano.hispano »

I am trying to find a way to apply for the Stimulus Check as an American living abroad. I tried the IRS website but they asked for a USA phone number which I don't have, and a USA bank account, which, again, I don't have. I have a six month old son born in Cambodia. I was teaching at a private school but they shut down. I haven't worked since mid February, and I am reaching the bottom of my bank account. Is there any other kind of help for expats living abroad? Or something else I can do? Hopefully I will start working online in a couple of days. It's part time but the pay is sustainable. Any info will be appreciated. Thanks.

There may be issues if you aren't registered at your current address in Cambodia. You'll probably have to get in touch with the embassy. Great scheme anyway. The small country I'm from would go bankrupt if it did a similar scheme considering its biggest export appears to be its population. 8-)

If you filed a tax return in the past two years, you get a check mailed to your last known address without further action. If you didnt, well, you dont get one (n/a to SSI, SS, RRA, etc, which you arent getting).

A lot of people I know just donated theirs. You may be able to find a group that passes on those donations.

Call the number. Use skype and prepare to be on hold for a long time.

Up until May 13th you were able to go online and provide information to receive an electronic payment. That deadline has come and gone. Now you need to contact the IRS to see if you qualify for a payment and provide an address for the check to be sent (I don't know what you are or are not allowed to do in this regard).

Be aware. If you are married to a foreign national (legally, and have filed taxes as married and assuming she is not an American citizen), then I don't believe you receive a stimulus check. I'm not commenting on whether that policy is good or bad - that's just the way it is.

Also be aware that unless your child has a SS # they will not qualify for an additional payment.

Assuming you qualify for a payment. I would NOT have them mail you a check to Cambodia. If possible I'd try to use a parent's address for the check to be sent to. I would assume they can tell you what options exist at this point. Just as an fyi, it costs $7 to do an in person (started on internet, completed at store) Western Union transfer for $1200 to Cambodia in USD.

Good Luck.

Just a comment that based on my experience with the Cambodian postal system, I hope no one will try to get it mailed here. Unless you can get the IRS to put your phone number on it.

If you have an SSN you are eligible to receive the stimulus payment. If you filed 2018 or 2019 taxes the check will be mailed to the address on record if no direct deposit information was provided. Check to make sure you are on the correct website. The IRS does NOT require a phone number. The real IRS website provides all the information you require to receive your money. I've included the IRS website address that will answer your questions. Read carefully and follow the instructions. You will be able to change your address etc. It may help to have an account here in the kow - but I don't know for sure. Receiving a check for 4.8 million Riel in Cambodia could be problematic. Do you have an account here? Is anyone available to assist you stateside?
I received my money via direct deposit in my US account. If possible open an account with a US credit union - you or a friend can do it online. I use the sdfcu.org. They are familiar with customers living abroad and all banking can be done online.
