Any success with Aliexpress?

Post by StroppyChops »

Has anyone had any success with Aliexpress shipping into Cambodia? If so, to a post office box?

It's the eBay of China. I've never used it but my brother in law does a fair bit. He's only been ripped off once but got the money back through PayPal.

That is shipping to Australia though, not Cambodia.

Yes I've used them successfully many times (6-7?). Just put your phone number in your address and they'll call you when it gets here. HOWEVER, I recently got a new credit card (old one expired) and they won't let me make new purchases... They sent me a dodgy message saying I needed to provide a bank statement, a copy of my passport, a copy of my credit card statement and a copy of my credit card (both sides). Sounds ultra shady but it seems they do this with many people. Ok fine, I send them the info and they then send me the same message back (like what I sent them wasn't good enough). Ummmm, fuck you. And it's also impossible to talk to anyone on Aliexpress. So as much as the concept is good, I've decided to boycott them now. Weird Chinese business practice. I might try to reopen an account under a different email and see if the card works then (works fine for ebay and amazon). But c'mon, someone updating a card shouldn't have to go through loops to purchase stuff... Especially an existing member...

But to answer your question, yes it works fine. Expect around 2 weeks for China mail. Much less for EMS, but EMS generally isn't needed imo. Good vendors on there, it's just the whole Aliexpress setup that has left a bad taste in my mouth.

Thanks BKL, good to know. I'll try them out with a couple of small purchases, from what I can see they're a portal/gateway for many small businesses so I guess a lot of user experience comes down to which actual business you buy from - like eBay. Thanks for the info.

Yeah try them out. As I said, I've never had any issue with any seller. People review the sellers/product and Aliexpress has a dispute function. I've also had a 100% success rate in terms of shipping. I used the dispute function once when I was sure a package had been lost. Tracking had "disappeared" in China and previous packages had always taken 2 weeks or so (this one was at 3). The seller asked me to wait a bit but I was sure it was lost (not their fault). But sure enough I got a call like 1-2 days later saying it had arrived so I promptly canceled my dispute and gave them a good review. My issue isn't with the sellers but with Aliexpress' seemingly arbitrary blocking of my credit card. They probably get lots of scamers, but it's a western credit card linked to a current account with many purchases. And it's impossible to contact them about it... So it kind of pisses me off. They're unknowingly blocking off a repeat customer.

Prices are sometimes the same as amazon/ebay, but free shipping is what sometimes makes it better for the Cambodian expat. I just wish they listed more motorcycle parts (I've never bought parts from them though, just random small items). Taobao.com is amazing, but they're not nearly as userfriendly as Aliexpress as it's for the Chinese market only.
