Any English teachers willing to share helpful hints??
Any English teachers willing to share helpful hints??
Hello
I am currently living in Phnom Penh and looking to find a reputable school where I can teach English part time, hopefully paying between $10-$20/hour. I am a young, female American born and bred citizen with a BA degree from the University of Washington, but do not have any "teaching" credentials. I am willing to get a TEFL or TESOL certification if there is somewhere reputable to obtain it here in PP (so any leads in that direction would be helpful too).
If you are currently working as a teacher, or have experience teaching English for pay here in Phnom Penh, and would be willing to share your advice I would much appreciate it! I am wary of working for a corrupt school that is only looking to make exorbitant amounts of money from their students, so names of good schools to apply to and to avoid would be great as well as any tips for getting hired, when certain schools will be starting (or if it is possible to land a job after school has already commenced), and recommended places to get TESL or TEFL certified Thank you in advance!

Und der Haifisch der hat Tränen
Und die laufen vom Gesicht
Doch der Haifisch lebt im Wasser
So die Tränen sieht man nicht
In der Tiefe ist es einsam
Und so manche Träne fliesst
Und so kommt es dass das Wasser
In den Meeren salzig ist
Und die laufen vom Gesicht
Doch der Haifisch lebt im Wasser
So die Tränen sieht man nicht

ICS stands for "International Computer School", even though they have either nothing or little to do with computers.....well, it's Cambodia.KHarding wrote:Ahhhh so many acronyms! Thank you.Francis wrote:ICS maybe (oposit Pencil Supermarket). Should be around $ 10 - 12 an hour.

Acronyms are possibly better than American Idol School

I don't know if it's reputable, but ELT still pays $15 an hour if you ONLY work 530pm-630pm, Monday through Friday.
$10 is as low as it gets.
As a female, you'll get scooped up to teach kids quite easily, if you're willing to teach kids.
^ Definitely PM Vlad. He's landed quite a few people teaching gigs in Cambodia.vladimir wrote:PM me for my email address/send me your CV

Vlad is indeed a good contact. You are your best tool. Market yourself well. Google how to do this of you don't know or remember.General Mackevili wrote:Hello again.KHarding wrote:... a reputable school where I can teach English part time, hopefully paying between $10-$20/hour.

I would give yourself 2 weeks to 1 month if possible to just settle into Phnom Penh. I would go out to places where expats hang out. Younger backpackers n teachers love Street 172 for the cheap drinks and good value food. Some great food is around there. Breakfast at Blue Dolphin. Pasta at Dolce Vita. Drinking at Sundance Saloon. Lonestar Saloon is walking distance from there.
Meet people and network. I have received multiple teaching jobs from different people I knew here in Phnom Penh.
I'll give ya 500 Riel for it...
Re: Any English teachers willing to share helpful hints??
Mackevili, what does ELT stand for? Do you have contact info for above mentioned gig? I am willing to work one hour five days a week for $15 with kids, depending on the school. If you don't have specific contacts can you send me their website? Thanks!General Mackevili wrote:

ELT = English Language Training. They don't have a website, but they are big. It looks like they have changed location. They are now here: https://www.google.com/maps/place/ELT+I ... 7ba4651ef7
ELT and Cambodian International University is actually the same company. I'd suggest to contact them directly (no email or phone call) - just go there with your CV in hands (dress up a little).
