Advise on crossing Street 274 on foot

Post by Dangerous Dave »

Hi again, everybody.

So I'm going to be living on Street 55 just north of Street 274 in Phnom Penh, but I'm going to be working (and, for all intents and purposes, *living*) in BKK1. This means at least two crossings of Street 274, on foot, every day -- and when I tried it during my February-March visit I got decidedly mixed results, though mercifully no actual physical trauma.

This is a silly question, but does anyone have any specific tips for me that might reduce the chances of being injured while crossing the street? Is there, for example, a better place to cross that isn't very far out of my way? Or some other suggestion? I suppose the simplest way is to develop a standing relationship with a tuk-tuk driver who doesn't mind the short distance, but does anyone have any other thoughts?

You like living dangerously I see. Anyway, there are different techniques for crossing streets. Most of Sihanouk ( I had to Google 274 because it's one of the few streets that is rarely referred to by its number) has central reservations or barriers. That makes it easier, even though a lot of traffic will be on the wrong side anyway.

What you can do is put your arm in the air, and just walk across at a steady pace, most traffic will just swerve around you. This is a technique often used by recyclers and hand cart hawkers, and glue-sniffers.

The other technique is to wait for a break in the traffic, and walk across through the gaps. If you are in a car you can just get a get a guard to barge out blowing his whistle, if he doesn't get killed you should be safe to do a 12 point turn.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

But yeah, John's "hand up" technique really works. Makes me feel safer, at least.

Cross at 63 street, it's less than 200 meters away from 55 and there are traffic lights and a central barrier there. The lights do impede the traffic a little :D

Committ...and once you do, don't slow down or speed up or stop, maintain a constant pace, motorists will maneuver around you, be confident and act like you own the road , this is the only way.

If you stop, run, slow down, whatever...you're likely to confuse the motorists and end up causing an accident.

...and you should seriously consider changing your username after asking a question like that!

Good advice... and always be prepared to 'jump & roll'.
You could be next.

"You must walk in the traffic if you want to cross the street" - Cambodian proverb

(ok I made that up but it's a good rule to live by)

Great advice, all. As for the username, it's all down to context: If you met my circle, and saw the world they live in, you would understand. :-)
