Advice and thoughts on moving to Cambodia please

Post by Wiccanmoon63 »

Hi, new to this group.... I'd be grateful if you could share your thoughts and advice with me please? I'm considering a life style change... I currently live in Scotland and seriously considering packing up and moving lock stock and three dogs to Cambodia. Would you advise it or not? I'm 51, female, single and have a good education. I currently work within social services in Scotland, so I guess I'd be looking for a new job.. Maybe a business, somewhere to live etc. not that bothered which part of the country I end up in. I'd be leaving all my friends and family on the trail of a new adventure and life. Sometimes you need to follow your heart and dreams... But with some advice and wisdom. Do I do it or not? Thoughts would be very welcome. Many thanks from a cold, wet and very windy Scotland.

Welcome to the board! :)

Have you ever been to Cambodia before? If yes: How long have you been there? Where did you stay? Why Cambodia?

Hi yes been to sr, pp and Sihanoukville... As well as some of the islands. visited the country four times in all. Just want to keep coming back and a holiday just doesn't really cut it. Iv also travelled Thailand and much prefer Cambodia. I dont have an answer regarding why I want to move ... It's a case of why not...unless someone tells me it's not a great idea. Did look at perhaps 6months initially but I'd be selling most of my possessions and since in in rented accommodation here I'd not have a house to come back to. It's really a massive life change. I'm totally fed up with weather in Scotland, the lifestyle, the lack of out door living, the cost of living is really high as well. I've always been a bit of a nomad but this would be drastic, even for me :-)

I say absolutely go for it! At 51 you should be doing whatever crazy things in life you fancy, and that includes moving halfway around the world to live in Cambodia!

How much time will your savings allow you to get settled down before you have to start working again?

I'd say Cambodia is as good a place as any for a life change. I hope it works out for you. :thumb:

When I started travelling I put all my meager possessions in a storage locker in the US. About 4 years later I finally got around to clearing out the locker and gave everything away. I wish I had done that immediately and saved 4 years of storage fees.

Thanks everyone :-) I thinks it's got to a now or never moment and I don't wanna sit and regret not trying it. Think I'd like to live by the beach... I live on the coast in Scotland.... However I was brought up on a farm, so happy in a rural location as well. Just so long as I can get by and pay my bills I'll be happy camper. I'm not sure what funds I'm gonna need as living there will no doubt be very different to being a tourist. Right now my bills are about $1300 a month and that's living expenses, car, rent etc. I am by no means living an extravagant lifestyle and feel I'm just working to live... Not liking it either. I work with people who are homeless, have mental health and drug issues and it's wearing me down after 18 yrs. any advice on how to go about this, pitfalls, useful contacts would be just great thanks. Thanks for all your help everyone :-)

Merry Meet Wiccanmoon63,

Decisions, like the one you are facing are not easy but look deep down and you will find the right path for you to take. The path you choose may not be point to point but a multi leg journey.

Scotland does not seem, currently to be working for you, so take the plunge and if you find you surface in a place that is not exactly right for you then just treat it as a stepping stone.

You may never find your perfect place but as long as you enjoy and grow from the path you take, maybe that is what matters more.

;)
