"Advanced" bike mechanic or part seller in Kampot?

Post by AE86 »

Hi everyone,

I'm on a bit of a bike tour of the country and ran into some problems in Kampot (just outside of Kampot actually).

Bike is a Japanese market PCX 125 (late model), not the Thai or NCX 150 or 160 versions that are everywhere here.

I've got damage likely to the ECM (best handbag tool diagnosis I can make without a code reader), but it may be a simple wiring loom issue (rats or something). Have to pull the body off today to find out.

I can fix it myself, but I have no idea where to start looking to source the parts I need if it's not just a bad ground or chewed through wire.

Anyone know of a good part seller down here?

Also if anyone has a cheap beater Cub style (manual shift bike) I might want to buy it from you to get around for now.

Cheers,
AE

Cross Tach on the road to Kep (left side, maybe 100-200m from Espresso coffee shop) is probably your best bet. There's also another guy buy Mittapheap (near the market) but I can't remember the exact street, nor his name, so not much help.

Hey, that's right where I am at having a morning coffee! Perfect, seems I chose a good place to have breakfast.

I had a similar problem on one of our small bike tour's! Rode from Koh Kong to Kampot, and went to visit Kep for the day, but on leaving we hit very heavy rain and the bike stopped, and me thinking it was water in the electrics. It was evening time and the rain was not letting up, I choice but to push the bike onwards. We eventually came across a moto workshop who were actually still working on bikes. It turned out to be the ECU, that they had to order for the Honda MSX, it would arrive in the morning for $25.
Hope you get it sorted with ease, good luck.

That's basically what's happened to me. I set off because it looked so sunny, but I ended up getting caught in the rain out of nowhere (was still sunny but the water was pouring like mad) and the bike isn't happy now, which is why I'm suspecting ECU issues potentially (although broken wire insulation acts similarly when wet so I wont rule that out).

Good to know stuff can be ordered easily though, I was a little worried about that.

I like yourself would rather do my own repairs, that way you can be sure of the work and fix. But the problem here sometimes can be getting hold of the parts. But if you take it into a roadside bike shop (possibly with you being there) you will be able to ask around for one recommended for good work, but at least you will get the part hassle free, and more than likely your moto fixed at a low price.

Was he open (north side)? Did you end up getting it fixed somewhere? His shop was pretty well equipped and he's a good mechanic, but he mainly did tours and covid hit them hard so I think he sold most of his dirt bikes and did cycling stuff instead. They owned the house so o assumed he'd still be open.

^^^I decided to pull the body apart first to see if there was any obvious problems underneath before I went part shopping and found nothing, but upon reassembly...seems like it's fine now.

Gave it a boot full of throttle, took it up to fairly high speed, nothing. :| I guess it fixed itself.

Anyway, I went up and down Rd.33 to have a look, and all I found was a place that said "Kampot Dirt Bikes" with one of those Hyundai flatbed trucks sitting in front and no one outside. There were a few scattered dirt bikes inside the house but it didn't look like anyone was doing much business (if that's the shop).

I didn't see anywhere with a sign that said "Cross Tach", nor did I see anywhere else that had dirt bikes.

He was rarely open even when doing tours, nice fellow though.

No mechanic shop at that house any longer

There's an English fellow with yellow curly hair fixing bikes near banyan tree, says he's got 10 years experience from England

Don't want to start another thread just for this, but luck has it, now I've got a badly damaged rear tyre (same bike).

Is there an actual Michelin or Bridgestone tyre seller in Kampot besides hole in the wall stores with that have only cheap Viet or Thai knockoffs? Haven't found any name actual name brand tyres that fit my bike. Size needed is (110/80-14) or will settle for a 100/90 if that's all that's available as I don't think it'll limp back to Phnom Penh in it's current state.

Cheers
