Another question for the OP is what does he hate about living in public housing in the USA.

If he says that he hates living in public housing in the states because his neighbours piss in the stairwell and wake up at 5am every morning and sing karaoke, Cambodia may not be the place for him.

Thanks for all the helpful information, Did someone say elderly? I don't want to be elderly! But if I stay here I'm going to be. I'm more like a kid than an old man in that i still want to be reckless and crazy but in a safer way, I do like that quote about the truth so true it is. I think I'm just going to sell what the wife and taxman didn't take from me and come to cambodia and live out my days.

When I arrived here over twenty years ago the state of the health service was poor, but it has progressed greatly and procedures unthinkable twenty years ago are now commonplace. However the perception of that service by many expats has remained static.

Which is pretty much the exact opposite of my experience. I have never had a problem communicating with the doctors. they have a philippino nursing director and at least 3 Philippino nursing staff. I know people who have had babies there and use their heart clinic with no compaints at all. I use Centrqal for me and kids from the village. never had anything except excellent care from Khmer and Philipinno staff. 1 example. Took kid to hospital with bad cough. Saw the French speaking paediatrician, who we have seen before. he gave us some meds. Following day at 7pm kid 's cough was getting worse. they called the doctor at home and he came in within 30 minutes. Free consultation and stronger meds. I have been patched up after a bike accidents, my friends clumsy girlfriend has been patched up twice (pissed me off because they ony charge her $5 and me $20 but hey) and a third time with a deep cut in her foot. Every hospital is going to have off days and central is one of the places that people either swear by or swear at. I have had much worse treatment at Bangkok hospital in Thailand, and do not even get me started on the bloody NAtional health service and doctors that do not listen or speak English. I ws in intensive care for 2 weeks because a doctor missed pneumonia for 6 months!

I honestly don't think it's enough, especially if you have medical issues which might need attention now and then.

My reply is my neighbors are really not the problem, even thou they are terrible people banging and stomping just to get a reaction from me, it's a game for them! The problem is the construction of the apt, and government officials coming to your home to inspect every 6 months, and having to fill out paperwork and a stupid manager the worst ever, And I can't afford to move anywhere else, life sucks here for me and the opportunity for me to better my life went down the drain years ago because of a criminal record, I had it all at one time just need a forest start, I'm a army veteran 73/79 so I do have the VA if I can get out of the country on my own when the time comes. By the way I'm from Oregun

I think $1100/mth is enough for an occasional drinker, in good health, and no live in girlfriend.
If you don't have a financial buffer, say $10-20k or woteva, then you need health insurance. Arguably need it anyway.
For retirement, PP is a fail for me due to traffic and poor air quality. I'd look at somewhere like Kampot, which also has more affordable housing.
Have some hobbies to avoid the slippery slope.........
