I think it's a couple things, a few of us know what type of discrimination the darker skinned ones my have faced all their lives, constantly being told you're too dark, not pretty, etc,
when in fact we find them really hot compared to the women we could get in the West, so it works for us and there might be an element of feeling sorry for the girls too.
Second, knowing the fact she's probably been told she's ugly all her life gives higher chances of her respecting you and not looking for someone else.
Third, for a dark skinned girl, getting a barang is a solution to her lifelong problems and major compensation for her "stigma", so dark skinned girls may be increasingly likely
to give the time of day to a barang, whereas light skinned girls have many suitors and don't really care. Dark skinned girls also may be higher motivated to have a mixed baby than light skinned ones.
Fourth, a lot of Western guys like dark skin, it's attractive to us, the same way white is attractive to them.

Is it just skin tone?
The paler girls are often too Chinese.
Either skinny, flat-chested and hip-less, or just flabby,
the more indian-influenced Khmer often have firm, yet tender, curves.
Also dark skin on white looks good in low light.

Especially with failing eyesight.

The lighter skinned ones have more mixed race in them. Especially when you see "koun kat" half Vietnamese or Chinese + Cambodian, those tend to be really attractive. It changes both skin color and facial features.
Indian women generally have much more of the pear shape than SE Asian ones, though there are exceptions. Even going to Burma the majority of girls have the slight pear shape since they have much more Indian mix in them.

Ladies of colour. Posters here on the subject, seem to like the girls no matter if dark or light skin colour.
But ask yourselves what the Khmer think, or talk to them about the subject. The lady with me is of the dark skin colour. She cooks in the bar and orders used to come from the massage girls working on the same street, mainly for themselves, and their customers at times!
That is until a new mama-san arrived to run one shop. She came to the bar and said "she is black and should not cook" what an instant impact this had, the girls now from the several shops, don't buy food from her. It also seems that in the Asian country's I have visited, racism is toned down. If this is not about I am of paler skin than you! Then what is it?

Some men prefer the darker skin types. I just know they look amazing and have something us white men don't. ..Nice tanned skin.

Don't listen to Gary. The typical native Cambodian has dark skin, therefore, the majority of Cambodian wives also have dark skin. Gary is a dick.
