Why dont the Poms grow balls and just leave?

If you have something so weird, strange or off-topic to post and think it doesn't belong in any other forum; you're probably right. Please put all your gormless, half-baked, inane, glaikit ideas in here. This might also be a place where we throw threads that appear elsewhere that don't belong ANYWHERE end up, instead of having to flush them. FORUM RULES STILL APPLY.

Re: Why dont the Poms grow balls and just leave?

As a 'pom', (albeit one who left the fair island almost 20 years ago), I don't think the government thought things through when they decided to hold a referendum about whether to stay or leave the EU.

The vote was almost split down the middle...
The gov seemed to forget that the UK consists not only of England, but also Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

OK, we can ignore the Welsh (bunch of sheep shaggers).

But what about Scotland, which seems to be very pro-EU (it has bugger-all to gain from leaving the EU).
What about Northern Ireland? Any sort of deal that doesn't sit OK with them could threaten the stability of that region. We do not want to return to the days of bombings and daily murders (which I recall in my youth).

Yep - the government really were pretty clueless when they decided to hold a vote.

That being said, I'm all for telling Junkers to stuff his EU where the sun don't shine......

You can give all posters that advice about any topic on here. It doesn't make for a lively forum though, does it?

Agree with Duncan, It was always Prisoner Of Mother England when I was a kid.

And, as you are no longer a prisoner, you can be an ex-pommy bastard!

Weren't the Aussies themselves the original prisoners of Mother England? I'm confused...

Yes, so you either descended from prisoners or prison wardens - not much of a choice really.

Etymology 1
Australian from 1912.[1][2] Shortening of pomegranate, rhyming slang for immigrant (“imme-granate”), with additional reference to the fact that the harsh Australian sun could turn British immigrants' skin pomegranate red.

Noun
pom (plural poms)

(Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, sometimes pejorative) An Englishman, a Briton; a person of British descent.
Usage notes
The use of this word to refer to a British person is considered by some to be pejorative or offensive. The word is, however, used by many Australians and some British people as a neutral or even an affirmative term.

Etymology 2
Shortening of pomegranate.

Or Gold miners. That’s where Melbourne came from. Or you could be a mixed race kid stolen from the bush

Rhyming slang comes from the final sound of the word, Pomegranate and Immigrant "Nat" and "Ant" dont Rhyme so that theory is a load of bollocks, its not how Rhyming Slang works

this is Rhyming slang...
Butchers hook = Look - Giz a butchers at that = Give me a Look at that
Ruby Murray = Curry - You wanna go for a Ruby later = Do you want to go eat a curry later
Barnet Fair = Hair - Check out that guys Barnet = Check out that guys hair
Gypsies Kiss = Piss(pee) - I'm just off for a Gypsies = I'm just off for a piss (pee)
China Plate = Mate - Alright me old China = How are you mate

etc etc

Agreed, I can't possibly see how it could be rhyming slang, for the main reason that is doesn't rhyme
