Not quite true, plenty of Cambodian men, particularly soldiers and Bokator fighters, get the protection tattoos (can't remember what they're called). You'll also notice guys who have worked on fishing boats in Thailand or elsewhere tend to have tatts.

i wouldnt say plenty of men, i think the amount of soldiers an bokator/pradel serey fighters is a fairly small total percentage of khmer men, one of the first topics of conversation with me with random khmer men (and i get stopped in the street alot by strangers and tuk tuk drivers etc) is about tattoos, due to the fact im covered, and 9/10 they say they dont have any and too scared to have one because of their family or people might think bad of them, and the ones that do have them are usually the tuk tuk drivers of whom have done some time in prison, and even them are just a small one on their arm
and after doing a lot of research theres not that many temples in cambodia where the monks tattoo people, even in thailand there is very few and you have to go out your way in order to get to them i know of one about an 1.5 away from bangkok and one a simular distance from chiang mai, most people go to the Ajarn monks (the ones that wear white who have served 10 Vassas)

i do agree living in sihanoukville i know some khmer guys that work in a bars on the beach, theyre all overed in tattoos taht they got working in thailand, some are orignally from burma doing the fireshows and that aswell, probs met on the fishing boats haha

i also have a sak yant of the 5 prayers on my bicep, had it done in thailand but in ancient Khmer Sanskrit
